About Sei Querce: “Among natural oak woodlands that rise from the banks of the Russian River to 1300’ in the Mayacama Mountains overlooking Geyserville, we grow 60 acres of premium Bordeaux variety grapes. Since 2010, we have been selling our fruit exclusively to top Napa and Sonoma wineries. Now we are introducing our own small lot, hand-crafted wines, selected from the very best organic fruit we grow. We call our wine simply ‘Sei Querce’, Italian for ‘six oaks,’ to remind us of the six venerable oak species that define and dominate the land we call home and the land that grows our wine.”

TASTING NOTES: “This Zinfandel shows how lively a Zinfandel can be, when picked not overly ripe, and when aged in neutral cask. It is an inviting ruby colour. Aromas of “berries and cream” dance with some light spice notes. There is a warm brown sugar note as well. On the palate, soft raspberry, damson plum, and just very subtle oak. I recommend drinking this wine over two days, or one long dinner, to follow its amazing evolution in the glass.” (AbV 14.6%, pH 3.76, TA 5.5 g/L)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: “Psycho Killer” by The Talking Heads.

Heavily inspired by Norman Bates in Psycho, it’s a strangely upbeat, or perhaps more aptly, delirious song. Byrne’s character narrates a series of neurotic thoughts, likely out of guilt or in contemplation of having killed. As Bates displayed two personalities (his own meek self and that of “mother”), the lyrics go between denial, urging people to stay away, and an apparent French killer.

Why French? Byrne thought changing the language would help signify the personality change. Why French as the language specifically, I don’t know. Tina Weymouth, the bassist, provided them, so perhaps it was because she spoke French?

Anyway, I thought it was funny that this was Byrne’s attempt at making a darker song, as the man can be pretty goofy. He says the song was mostly a quick, jokey thing, but it ended up being one of the standouts of their early career.
