TASTING NOTES: “The 2022 vintage produced a full and fruit forward Cabernet Sauvignon featuring characters of strawberry, mixed berry pie, and bright cherry on the nose. The palate leads to flavors of cherry cola, strawberry jam, and soft vanilla framed by a fine, structured tannin profile. The palate finishes with a subtle touch of French oak and an elegant balance between tannin, acidity, and body.” (AbV 14.1%, pH 3.82, TA 5.5 g/L)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: The kola nut.

Everyone knows where the “coca” part of Coca-Cola comes from, but do you know where the “cola” does? That would be the kola nut, the seed of a cola plant. While a Coke no longer contains cocaine, it does have plenty of caffeine, and guess what’s got a lot of caffeine? The kola nut!

Although it isn’t used in Coca-Cola today. At least, as of 2016. Separate from commercial use, the kola nut has long been used in various West African cultures. You can chew them as a pick-me-up, and some folk medicine might see them as a cough remedy.

Wouldn’t advise trying it on a whim without warning you that it’s pretty bitter. But if you need a bit of caffeine, there you go.
