Spellchecking programs originally only worked for verifying spelling rather than correcting it. Words would be flagged, but there wasn’t a suggestion or anything as far as what it should be changed to. Additionally, while in theory you would want the program to know every word, it creates the issue of some typos not being flagged because they are actually a different, probably-more-obscure word.
