Based in both New Mexico and California, Zeppelin Winery’s been producing super small batches of well-crafted wines since 2009. They specialize in Syrah and “other misunderstood varietals,” a statement that alone inspires some intrigue. Usually their wines can only be purchased direct, so grab them while you can.

When the Viognier Breaks

TASTING NOTES:
Viognier: Colossal. Lemon, white peach and yellow apple aromas and flavors, surprisingly good acidity balanced by a very slightly sweet impression from alcohol, glycerol and nonfermentable sugars. Full and lush, plausibly at its peak though half-opened bottle not faded the next day.

Marine Layer: Boysenberry, dried cranberry, red plum, venison jerky, clove and French oak; the blend makes it something of a “La Mort Du Roi” in reverse; lower extract and alcohol of course. Light to moderately smooth tannins.

Negrette: Black plum, Capitol Reef Lambert cherry, and herbs and spices that would be called garrigue in France; complex fruits, spice and medium-high acidity on the palate, but texturally smooth - the tannins are smooth. Russian oak - vanilla and smoke - lengthens the finish.

TANGENTIALLY RELATED FACT to help you make conversation over this wine:
Led Zeppelin allegedly took their name from the idiom “go over like a lead balloon.” The “a” in “lead” was dropped so that people wouldn’t try to pronounce it like “leed” zeppelin. Honestly, Lead Zeppelin calls to mind something like an entire armada of zeppelins. That’d actually be pretty badass.

DRINK IT FROM/WITH (conventional option):
Red wine glass, though the Viognier is, as described, colossal. Take ‘em for a spin with your classic red food pairings.

OR (really-going-with-the-theme option):
One of Bonham’s old drum shells. Pour one out for him too. Not one of these ones, though. This is the good stuff. Would just be wasteful.
