Spunky and Inviting

TASTING NOTES: “A spunky, inviting and super fun nose captures you with notes of black cherry, fresh herbs and cedar. The wine is taut with great structure, very fine grained tannins and fresh beautiful acidity. Flavors of boysenberry, pinecone, celery seed, Christmas spice and a hint of black licorice dance around and invite you to have another glass.” (AbV 14.7%, pH 3.71, TA 6.2 g/L)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: The word spunky. Very strange word. Everything has to come from something, so what the heck did spunky, or I guess spunk, come from?

Spunk, funk, and punk all used to refer to tinder, as in flammable substances. This is because they likely came from the Gaelic “spong,” which had a similar meaning, but as you might have guessed, that word is rooted in the Latin “spongia,” which of course means sponge. So somewhere in between those the meaning changed. Given spunk referred to tinder, it is easily associated with sparking. As such, it is possible that saying someone had spunk began as a comparison to being easily sparked or having a spark to them. And having a spark is a way of saying someone is displaying courage, spirit or energy, so there you go. That’s how you get spunk and spunky.
