TASTING NOTES: “Aromas of dark berries, purple flowers, clove spice, and roasted cacao. The palate is rich and velvety, with fine-grained tannins and dense fruit, unveiling layers of black currant, sandalwood, toasted hazelnut, and allspice. Vibrant, full bodied and expressive, decanting reveals the full depth and complexity of this young Cab.” (AbV 14.5%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: The viceroy. Not a particular one, just the title in general.

What even is a viceroy? You hear it every so often as the title of some guy with authority, but what makes a person a viceroy specifically rather than any of the many other titles out there?

The viceroy is usually someone who is formally put in a position of power to act as a representative of some royalty. Not in a general sense, though. Most often these were people placed in charge of overseas or simply not-inside-the-actual-country locations under that royal’s jurisdiction. For example, Spain had two viceroys for their overseas colonies in the Americas, one for North and Central America and another for South America. There is overlap with the role of a governor, in many cases being essentially the same thing. As long as there is a monarch involved and they appointed the person, a viceroy is a governor and a governor is a viceroy.
