2018 & 2017 - “Tempranillo! Ten years ago you couldn’t even say ‘Tem-prah-NEE-yoh’ and now, you - ladies and gentlemen - from what was only an inarticulate mass of Cab-swirling tissue, I give you a Cultured, Sophisticated Tempranillo lover about town!” (AbV 14.5%)

"The Thief” Toro - “‘Toro’ Tempranillo is a different clone than most of the Tempranillo out there. (Regular Tempranillo is called ‘Clone 1’ in the biz - true!) Toro is a more full bodied red that is at home with a juicy rib eye or any umami rich dish (mushrooms!) We source our Toro from Metate Vineyards near Angels Camp, CA - right down the road from us.” (AbV 13.5%)

VARIETALS: It’s all Tempranillo from here, baby.

BARRELS: Probably.

PAIRS WITH: While they recommend grilled pork, ribs, or a nice paella for the regular Tempranillo, go with a rib eye or some umami-rich dish for “The Thief.”

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Tempranillo, for obvious reasons. While entertaining, I don’t know that the notes provided by Twisted Oak quite articulate what Tempranillo’s whole deal is. So let’s take a look, particularly at what’s different about it.

First off, it is the Spanish varietal. Spain grows something like 86%+ of the world’s Tempranillo. If you get something Rioja and the like, chances are it includes Tempranillo. Next, it is an early ripening variety of grape, which is where it gets the name (temprano means early). It is not as aromatic as most well known reds, which is part of why it often gets blended. Last, expect plum, cherry, and berries along with the typical oak-imparted flavors and perhaps some dried fig or dill in there too.

Fun fact: Tempranillo leaves turn bright red in the fall.
