THAT REMINDS ME OF: The sequel to the 1974 film Chinatown! 1990’s The Two Jakes, that is. Yes, the sequel came out 16 years later. Honestly, given what the movie industry has been doing the last few years, not as wild as it probably was back then. Anyway, the two Jakes of the movie are J.J.“Jake” Gittes, the private investigator protagonist you may recognize from the first film, and Julius “Jake” Berman, a real estate developer. Berman hires Gittes to investigate his wife Kitty’s supposed infidelity. Berman, amid the investigation, kills his business partner, and the believed lover, Mark Bodine. Gittes, because of his presence, has to prove himself to the police to not be an accomplice, while also figuring out just what went on here. Were Berman’s actions a spontaneous act of jealousy that could be considered temporary insanity, or was this all premeditated, and if so, why?

Natural gas is found under Berman’s housing development, but who actually owns the rights to the land! Why is Berman so unconcerned with the murder charge! One of the characters was actually a key person in Chinatown who’s now living under a pseudonym! Houses explode! All this, and more!
