THAT REMINDS ME OF: Little Hill
What’s the actual cutoff between a hill and a mountain? There isn’t one, officially. Geologists and geographers have never agreed on a universal elevation line — the UK’s Ordnance Survey used to informally call anything over 1,000 feet a mountain, Scotland’s Munro Society drew its own list at 3,000 feet, and the US Geological Survey gave up on defining the difference altogether decades ago. So somewhere out there, a hill in one country would be filed as a proud little mountain in another, purely on a technicality of paperwork.
Which means “Little Hill” is a taxonomically unstable name. Move it a few hundred miles, redraw the survey lines, and it could reasonably start calling itself a mountain — no rock has to move, no elevation gained, just a change in whoever’s holding the map. I find that oddly comforting. Greatness, geologically speaking, is at least partly a filing decision.
