What A Fiasco

TASTING NOTES: “Noceto’s Rosso is a predominantly Sangiovese blend sourced from vineyards throughout the central coast and northern California. Made in a food-friendly Chianti style, this is a simple, easy-drinking go-to for an everyday red that will go with everything on your plate.

NV Rosso opens with a nose of cherry-berry, fruit roll-up, and cedar. Secondary flavors include bright cherry, cassis, leather, minerality, and balanced acid.” (AbV 13.0%)

VARIETALS: Sangiovese.

BARRELS: French oak.

PAIRS WITH: Charcuterie to Barese ragù or Korma.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Chianti and fiascos.

So Chianti is a predominantly Sangiovese-based red wine from the, who could’ve guessed, the Chianti region of Tuscany. Wine in Chianti goes back to the 14th century, but a specific designation of Chianti came about in the 1700’s. It wasn’t until the 1800’s that it became primarily Sangiovese, though often there are blends with Canaiolo.

A fiasco is a type of bottle, essentially the Italian word for a flask. Chianti was associated with fiascos for quite a while, up into the 20th century. The fiasco is a squat, round-body bottle identifiable by its often being inside a straw basket. Makes for easy carrying. Especially if the bottle itself has a round bottom, then you can rely on the basket to hold it upright. The Vino Noceto Rosso is, obviously, not in fiascos (fiaschi?).
