2022 Alma Rosa “North Slope” Pinot Noir, El Jabali Vineyard, Sta. Rita Hills
In the glass, Alma Rosa’s 2022 North Slope Pinot Noir, which was sourced almost entirely from its own estate El Jabali Vineyard, alongside a small amount of carefully selected partner fruit sourced from top growers along the southern corridor of the Sta. Rita Hills, is a strikingly deep, rich ruby hue. On the nose, the wine shows ripe red fruit, freshly picked flowers, citrus peel, lavender and mint. Reflective of the excellent and “classic” 2022 growing season, this wine, with its bright red fruit flavors, lively acidity, distinctive oceanic salinity and firm yet elegant tannins, exemplifies why the Sta. Rita Hills is such a special and distinctive place to cultivate Pinot Noir.
Who We Are
Alma Rosa is deeply rooted in the winemaking history of the Santa Rosa Hills in the southern sector of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. Here, growing conditions combine sunshine with the powerful cooling influence of onshore winds and fog from the Pacific Ocean. The unique geography, chilly climate, and clay-loam soils attracted Richard Sanford to this area in the early 70s where he pioneered Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara County. Growing consistently balanced wines through sustainable farming is part of the enduring legacy of our founder Richard Sanford.

98% El Jabali Vineyard, remaining 2% composition of La Encantada, Rancho La Viña and Radian Vineyard

Vintage Notes
The 2022 vintage began with cold mornings and warm afternoons, a trend that lasted through April. Ideal summer temperatures continued, with morning fog and persistent afternoon breezes from the Pacific Ocean. This steady weather resulted in a long, moderate growing season, which allowed the grapes to develop slowly and gradually, with small berries and clusters. A September heatwave provoked a fast and short harvest with long hours in the winery processing a deluge of beautiful fruit. The resulting crop yielded fruit with bright acidity and minerality, beautiful aromas and complexity. A spectacular and “classic” Sta. Rita Hills vintage, 2022 reminded Alma Rosa’s Founders Richard and Thekla Stanford of 1971, the year they first planted Pinot Noir in the Sta. Rita Hills.

Our mission at Alma Rosa is to produce exceptional wines that exemplify the best of our unique cool climate terroir in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation of northern Santa Barbara County. We specialize in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Rhone varieties including Grenache and Syrah.
We are focused on continuous improvements in the vineyard and in the cellar, favoring sustainable farming and minimal inputs in the winemaking process to express our special terroir. Though most of our wines are from our special El Jabali Estate, we also make wines from select vineyards along the southern corridor of the Sta. Rita Hills to showcase the differences in micro-climates and soils identified by our founder Richard Sanford when he planted the first Pinot Noir vines in this region back in 1971.
Finally, we believe in giving back to the community, and our Peace of Mind: 10,000 Steps in the Right Direction annual fundraiser for mental health has raised nearly $1 million since 2020 to fund local mental health services and cutting-edge brain health research through gifts to Mental Wellness Center in Santa Barbara and One Mind.
