2018 Casino Mine Ranch Vermentino, Shenandoah Valley
Tasting Notes
Our fourth vintage of the esoteric Italian varietal Vermentino—albeit with a Californian twist—has reached its stride in the vineyard, full stop. Originally hailing from coastal Tuscany and Sardinia, it embodies a unique expression from its perch nestled in the volcanic soils of the Sierra foothills. We harvest at night, gently whole-cluster-press, and ferment in stainless steel, all to retain its freshness. To add a touch of roundness to the wine, we age briefly sur lie. The resulting wine is of a brilliant lemon hue, with aromatic notes of candied lemon peel and lychee, and hints of orange blossom. The palate is generous with citrus and lean tropical fruits – think freshly squeezed lemons, green papaya, and young pineapple! – in a balanced and refreshing framework of bright acidity and ample minerality.
Winemaking
Whole cluster pressed, fermented in stainless steel, aged sur-lie for seven months.
Food Pairing
Enjoy with oysters — any style, tapas, or Blanchard’s buttermilk fried chicken.

Our fifth vintage of the esoteric Italian varietal Vermentino—albeit with a Californian twist—has reached its stride in the vineyard, full stop. Originally hailing from coastal Tuscany and Sardinia, it embodies a unique expression from its perch nestled in the volcanic soils of the Sierra foothills. We harvest at night, gently whole-cluster-press, and ferment in stainless steel, all to retain freshness. To add a touch of roundness to the wine, we age briefly sur lie. The resulting wine is of a brilliant lemon hue, with aromatic notes of citrus— running the gamut from lemon to lime and zest to juice – and stone fruits to boot, like white peaches. The palate is layered with lean tropical notes of fresh pineapple, green mango, pink peppercorns, hints of white-petaled flowers, and a bright, yet round finish, evoking memories of lemon meringue pie on a sunny afternoon.
Winemaking
Whole cluster pressed, fermented in stainless steel, aged sur-lie for seven months.
Food Pairing
This wine pairs happily with any apt Tuesday and a nice miso-glazed black cod or your favorite fare of the sea!

Casino Mine Ranch is an estate vineyard located in the Sierra Foothills of Amador County. The winery - a century old ranch that was once mined for gold — is owned and managed by fourth-generation California brothers, Jim and Rich Merryman.
The vineyard is planted and farmed to best harness the potential of the site, through thoughtfully selected grape varietals. In keeping with the family’s pioneering spirit, the Merryman’s partnered with the highly acclaimed winemaking team of Andy Erickson and Jessica Tarpy who share a passion for great wines from special sites. Together with their commitment to hard work, connection to the land, and passion to produce the best wine possible they are pursuing a legacy that honors the history, family, and the land.
We invite you to visit our Amador County ranch. You can taste our rare and exceptional wines in our private cellar, and you can step into our wine cave, originally carved out by miners.
“This is Gold Country. So there are all these great mineral deposits: Quartz that sparkles, and volcanic rock, and ash. And the wine caves—these are not Napa Valley caves—are former mine caves, carved out of the hills.” Andy Erickson, Consulting Winemaker

Super tired very brief review I will add more tomorrow and answer questions.
Thanks Alice and everybody for sending me some delicious wine.
Wife’s take: it’s light and easy drinking
My take: It tastes like when you bite into a slightly unripe nectarine and taste the skin the meat and the seed all of the same time. That bitter mouth feel on the initial hit followed by the tart fruit. Also it tastes like granny smith apple skin . Very little nose to speak of and or I just have allergies. Also , when we first opened it, tasted a little bit like the Japanese Muscat gummies.
Check out who the winemakers are. Andy Erickson and Jessica Tarpy (really it’s Jessica Tarpy). Great fruit and very cool winery. I think casino mine ranch is at the very top end of Shenandoah valley in our county. very glad, and even a little bit surprised to see their way here. Just bought six

I feel the need to contribute some useless info, as always, so a short video from the winery on the 2019.
And if it’s useless information is it really a contribution?
Wine Advocate tickled the tongue with the 2018…
87 points. The 2018 Vermentino is neutral and fresh, with apple and pear fruit on the nose and notes of baker’s yeast and almonds. The palate is light and fresh, neutral and juicy with a finish that opens to grapefruit tones and a lingering touch of texture. 475 cases produced. Drink 2021 - 2022 Erin Brooks Jun 03, 2021
@kaolis It was useful to me - before I buy an older white, I like to see a recent report of how it is holding up. Seeing a suggestion that its best window ended two years ago made me decide not to buy without a rattage that says it is still at its peak. And the brief notes we got (easy drinking, little to no nose) made me think it was perhaps too old.
@rjquillin@tercerowines they had a great GM who, in my opinion did it all. I noticed that she recently left. Jessica Tarpy is the winemaker, but also is for Favia in Napa. Maybe spread thin. Who knows. With that - always and always appreciate when the wine makers or owners pip on here. Definitely helps with sales

Casino Mine Ranch puts out some solid wines. This is a great deal!
Winery participation???
@tercerowines All too frequently an issue.
Are they just not advised they have an offer that’s live ?
@rjquillin they HAVE to know that the offer is happening and when it is happening. Period. It’s a choice.
