A historic name reborn, the 2019 “Les Sables Noir” (The Black Sands) revives the 19th-century legacy of Château Romefort, sourced from 18 hectares of original vineyard land in Cussac-Fort-Médoc. This Cru Bourgeois delivers classic Left Bank depth: spiced plum, black cherry, licorice, vanilla, walnut, and a hint of raw mushroom. Full-bodied and firmly textured, it layers plush dark fruit over fine-grained tannins, finishing long and chalky with true Médoc restraint. A modern return to form with unmistakable heritage.
This cuvée, “Les Sables Noir” represents a parcel selection from a contiguous block of 5.45 hectares (Cadastral Parcels No. 19 through 25). The vineyard features dark sandy-gravel top soils resting over a clay-gravel subbase. The sand promotes early spring warming and excellent surface drainage, while the clay foundation ensures steady moisture retention during dry summer periods, yielding a supple, finely structured Médoc wine with generous fruit expression.

About The Winery
Winery: Château Romefort
Château Romefort is a historic 19th-century property situated in Cussac-Fort-Médoc, nestled along the Gironde estuary between Margaux and Saint-Julien. Formerly managed under the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) group and long recognized as a Cru Bourgeois, the property is now integrated with and overseen by neighboring Château Lamothe-Bergeron.
The architectural foundations of Château Romefort trace back to the first quarter of the 19th century. Located at 18 avenue du Fort-Médoc, the residence was built alongside traditional winery outbuildings (cellars and vat houses) designed for estate viticulture.
Like many neighboring properties situated near the 17th-century Vauban-designed Fort Médoc on the Gironde estuary, Romefort was developed to capitalize on the region’s distinct gravel terraces and proximity to river shipping routes. It was established as a wine estate with dedicated parcels on the south-facing plateau of Cussac.

Lab rat checking in! It’s been a busy evening. Mediterranean for dinner, so delicious! Then a fantastic time was had at a Rocky Horror Picture Show theater show with a surprise Drag Queen performance at intermission!
And now, 45 past the hour, it’s time for The Traitors and this lovely 2019 Château Romefort Villa Romefort “Les Sables Noir” Haut-Médoc. What a fantastic wine !
It is wonderfully dry, and at 13% packs a punch but was oh so delightful. This one is a definite yes from me. It’s far too late for specifics on taste, but it was absolutely stunning. A must buy for me!
