2022 Deerfield Roussanne, Kunster Miers Vineyard, Sonoma Valley
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Deerfield Roussanne has the crispness of Sauvignon Blanc with the flavor of white peaches and honey.
The Wine
Roussanne is a white grape from the Rhone region of France and our favorite Rhone white wine. Sonoma Valley is a perfect place to grow it. The wine has the crispness of Sauvignon Blanc with the flavor of white peaches and honey. We enhance these characteristics by very gentile cold pressing the juice from the grapes and fermenting it on selected yeast at a cold temperature. It pairs beautifully with light luncheon fare.

PJ and Robert met at Berkeley in 1968. Robert, a back yard mechanic, kept PJ’s Italian sports cars running – takes an Italian to do that. As a thank you, PJ gave Robert, who was already interested in fine wine, a winemaking kit – seemed a good gift for a chemist grad. Robert made his first wine in his garage in Berkeley in 1972. He entered it in the California State Fair and took home the Best of Show Award. Robert found his passion and continued making wine in his garage, turned winery, for his family and friends.
Ten years later, PJ and Robert left their good jobs in the city to pursue their dream of owning a winery in the Sonoma Valley. In 1982, they bought the Deerfield Ranch in Glen Ellen where they got married, and turned the horse barn into their first winery. The Rexes still live there today, however, in 2000, they bought 47 acres on Highway 12 in Kenwood to expand the winery operation. The Deerfield Ranch Winery is still family owned and operated producing about 20,000 cases a year.
Our wines are barrel aged in the 23,000 sq. ft. cave, also home to the tasting room open daily to the public. Winemaker Robert Rex was the pioneer of the cleanwine® movement and can often be seen at the winery. His philosophy is “Wine should be good and good for you.”

I was a home wine maker for over 25 years, and when I started and got my press, I tried to get every last drop of liquid out of the grapes, only later I figured that the increased pressure, to squeeze those last few ounces, was also increasing the amount of sediment in the wine. (Thus effecting the amount of increased filtration needed and also taste)
@ejrunion Not Kosher? LOL! One of my old cigar friends had a great kosher winery in CA back in the late 90’s called Gan Eden. I enjoyed the wine and they were always a hit when I’d visit Kosher friends or attend Passovers. I was sad to see it end! https://www.ganeden.com/
Rat here! I was only able to get this bottled lightly chilled and in a glass tonight (now, in fact!) so this write up will be less of a narrative, and more of a flow of impressions.
Very light straw color, not at all what the stock image above might have you believe. A very visually appealing wine that suggests light, bright, and crisp. Bottled and labeled in a simple and elegant manner; would make for a lovely summertime patio party gift.
On the nose: sour, leading to citrusy… both the bright notes and pithy notes of “citrusy”. Light honey after the wine sits in a glass and warms slightly.
Tastes like it looks, in a good way. Sour notes, lemon zest and juice, leading to a buttery finish. Not necessarily diacetyl butter, but a faint finish thats pleasant. There is a bit of tanic structure that keeps the wine honest, and well balanced. Very refreshing!!
Overall, we enjoyed it very much. I am not super familiar with Roussanne, but this was a vary nice introduction.

What is “very gentile cold pressing”???
@ejrunion A lightweight 120 pound stomper rather than a 325 pound offensive lineman?
