In the Pacific Northwest there are several very good unoaked chardonnays. With the usual sale deals (or buy 6 get 10% off, etc), many could be had for $9-$12. Those would be my preferred taste.
Some of the CA oaked/butter ones can be good, but prices go up quickly, and as discussed here, tastes can be very subjective.
