Located in the northern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the Cabrières district, the estate vineyards are grown on sandy soil over a limestone subsoil. The vineyards are north-facing, which brings a lot of freshness to the wines.
Winemaking
80 to 120-year-old organic Grenache and Mourvèdre grapes are naturally fermented in concrete fermenters and aged in large neutral oak foudres that all lead to a stunningly elegant wild berry and garrigue flavors complemented by scents of dried flowers, orange zest, and anise. If you are looking for an old-school, unadulterated world-class wine you have come to the right place.

The name, Le Prieuré des Papes, is in reference to the Priory of the Popes building located at the foot of the castle village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and forming part of the estate. Previously known as Domaine La Millire, Domaine le Prieuré des Papes is now under the helm of France’s superstar sommelier, Antoine Petrus, who in addition to managing this estate, is in charge of Domaine de Coyeux in Beaumes de Venise and is a partner in the restaurant La Mère Germaine, located in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. They produce three red Châteauneuf-du-Pape, two of them being single vineyards, one white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and one red Côtes du Rhône.

The wine has a very nice garnet color in the glass, and just smells lovely. On the nose, I got black cherry, blackberries, leather, spices, and maybe some lighter berries in the background.
The first sip has a taste of dark cherry, blackberry, and leather like the nose indicated along with maybe a hint of dark chocolate. It has a smooth, light mouthfeel and a nice dry finish. It does taste like it may be a little young and will improve with age. We’ll see what waiting an hour or so does.
After an hour it opened up a bit. It has a bit more berry and fruit, but still has the leather and chocolate with maybe a little tobacco. This is a very nice wine that is just drinkable now, or I imagine would be very nice after a couple years in the cellar.
On the 2nd day, it opened up more. There’s a hint of pepper in there. It is still a tasty wine right now that holds a promise of being more in a couple years. It wasn’t a perfect pairing, but I really enjoyed it with roasted chicken, jus, and creamy potatoes. This is an excellent wine that I really wish I could afford to buy a case of!
Thank you for the opportunity. Short story: we love Rhône varietals but 90% of our experience is with Santa Barbara and to some extent Paso. Wife and I pegged SRP at $35 and felt a great value under $20 based on our tasting experience. Surprised at the $90/per
Color depth: medium
Color hue: garnet with a light haze
Aroma: we both found it aromatic with strawberry marmalade, white pepper, and nutmeg (me) cinnamon (her)
Tasted at 60 degrees. Wine was dry, with a medium body and tannins, found it had refreshing acidity and well balanced.
Guessed alcohol at 14 and would classify it as new world in style
Tasted charred strawberry, sagebrush, and had a slight bitterness mid palate that dissipated after an hour. Medium finish.
Verdict: went well with pizza and Tyson boxing match. We found it enjoyable if by a bit one dimensional. We were hoping for more but after careful consideration we both agreed it was good not great. 3.5/5 stars
Not to quote Jimmy Buffett because this is useless and not important information… the Dunnuck review was 11/3/21, drinking window 2021 - 2037, also mentioning the 2019s are rock solid, but he has no doubt the best is yet to come from this estate.

Score 16.5 / 20. Certified organic. Named after the sunset. 60% old Grenache – not the usual Syrah ingredient (the land is too dry for Syrah) – and 40% Mourvèdre. One plot made whole bunch. 50% aged in foudres and demi-muids, 50% in tank. Some 25-, 40- and 60-year-old vines. In the Cabrières sector with its sandy soil. Quite firm and still structured. The briary and dried-herbs framework is filled in with sweet, red-cherry fruit. Fresher than most thanks to late ripening. Drink 2025 - 2033. Tasted 6/9/23. JR (Note she has the blend at 60 / 40 not 90 / 10 as in specs above)
UPDATE: inadvertently left about 4 ounces in open bottle overnight and tasted just now. Wine is just as fresh as last night which bodes well for a long lifespan. Very drinkable and enjoyable with egg scramble. Can feel a bit of heat but not obtrusive. Nice wine but a bit high on the price imo though like I wrote earlier we are not. CDP household
