Gorgeously perfumed, this Touriga Nacional is rich in aromas of fig, orange blossom, wild violets, and plum. The structure is precise and the texture dense, both enhanced by time in oak, but there is also an overall elegance at work that lifts this above the bar.
Touriga Nacional produces a full-bodied red wine from Portugal with tremendous aging potential. Most commonly revered for its role in port production, it has only recently been championed as a dry red wine. It offers bold structure & profound depth of flavor at a terrific value.
Elaboration: Grapes harvested by hand on 9 September with selection taking place in the field. Open lagar maceration and fermentation, aged in French oak barrels for 14 months.
Dorina’s Touriga Nacional bottling was the first of its kind and has launched a new appreciation and excitement for the varietal in Portugal.
In the late 1970’s Hans Jörg Böhm, a German viticulturist of tremendous energy and passion, arrived to Portugal to undertake the daunting task of cataloging the Portuguese wine varietals. He suspected there were a number of lesser-known and unidentified varieties with great potential – he cataloged 340 different varietals and opened the first vine nursery in Portugal, dubbed “Evora” in the region of Alentejo.
This knowledge, passion, and sense of purpose, to celebrate and ensure the future of indigenous varietals was passed to his daughter Dorina Lindemann, herself a young enologist who in 1997 founded the winery Quinta da Plansel.
Dorina’s work is focused on non-varietal wines and blends of the most significant grapes of northern Portugal: Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, and Touriga Franca. In 2001, she launched the first single varietal wines in Portugal and continues to champion these iconic grape varieties.

Well, as far as the reviews mentioned above I’m pretty confident the 92 point review from Wine Enthusiast is for the 2017 version of this wine and the Gold Medal from Mundus Vini is for the 2016, neither for this 2015. That seems to be confirmed on the importer website, Elixir Wine Group, which states under press and points:
2016 – Gold medal, Mundus Vini
2017 – 92 Points, Wine Enthusiast
However, tastings.com / Beverage Testing Unit says of the 2015:
89 points. Silver Medal. Highly Recommended. $24.99
Medium violet color. Aromas and flavors of raspberry vinaigrette, black plum, balsamic, and leather with a supple, lively, dry medium body and a warming, interesting, medium-long finish with accents of fresh soil with medium, drying tannins and a suggestion of oak flavor. A rich and balanced red that can stand on its own.
and…upon further review (pun intended?) Mundus Vini (who?) did give a silver medal to this 2015. Tasting was summer 2018. No notes, but here is the flavor profile they gave to this wine:
@gemeinschaft79 that review is for a special edition which this does not appear to be. I couldn’t find anything for the non special edition 2015. Waiting for a rat.
I think I will be producing a dry Touriga next year from the same vineyard we get our Forte from. So, I’m in. Want to better familiarize myself with the original version.
Cheers,
Scott
@ScottHarveyWine btw: recently had the current InZin vintage - Excellent as always - maybe even a little more balanced than usual. and … I realized I have at least two vintages of Barbera - thinking I will do a mini-vertical to see the differences of ageing.
@finewiner Just got off the phone with the Touriga Grower and he doesn’t have any left to sell. I did contract for 10 tons of Vermentino for 10 years. So, in the future we’ll have some of that for you all.
Husband and I were lucky to receive this bottle earlier this week. This is a new one for us and we had no idea what to expect.
First thing I noticed was the color. It’s a beautiful deep ruby.
Nose: not quite ripe blackberry (a familiar smell here in W. Washington), plum, a bit of green apple and a tiny hint of oak.
Mouth feel is pleasant and smooth
Taste was a hint of spice but more toward the fruity side. It was a bit on the sweet side for my tastes but husband quite liked it. Not too much of a finish.

@kaolis A 6 on the Beerenfruchte scale? In for two cases! /s
Taking a flyer on this one. It got decent reviews & tasting notes on https://www.vivino.com/US/en/pt-quinta-da-plansel-dorina-lindemann-limited-edition-touriga-nacional-touriga-franca/w/1188238?year=2015 FWIW.

@mattig88 Not sure we are going to get a rat on a 24 hour sale. Hope we do though!
@gemeinschaft79 @mattig88 Also rare when they are import offers, but for a flyer like this generally CM does a good job trying to get rats.

@ScottHarveyWine Great! Can’t wait to see more of your wine as it’s an auto buy for me;)

@woopdedoo Yes, the current InZinerator was produced a little more dryer than previous vintages. I like it better that way.
@ScottHarveyWine Nice! Can’t wait for ANY offerings you put up soon:)
@finewiner @ScottHarveyWine Yes, love Vermentino. How long do we have to wait?
@ScottHarveyWine Would be interesting to have some folks return to this thread and exchange some thoughts/views with you after trying it.
In for a case. Happy to split if anyone Northern Indiana/SW Michigan has an interest.
Very late Lab Rat (so sorry).

It’s balanced and I can tell well made.
