2022 Furthermore Chardonnay, Graton Ridge Vineyard, Russian River Valley
93 Points & Gold Medal, Sunset International Wine Competition
Tasting Notes
This wine features aromas of pineapple, apple, maple, fig, toasted pecan, oak, lemon zest, butterscotch, cinnamon, fresh hay and spearmint. It has a well balanced acidity with a plush mouthfeel, heavy weight with a lingering peach/dried apricot finish.
The Vineyard
This Furthermore Wines estate vineyard is planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and is located on the winery property just outside of the tasting room, sharing a fence with neighbor Paul Hobbs. The location is on the western side of the Russian River Valley just north of Sebastopol and up the hill from the bucolic town of Graton at the top of the Laguna Ridge.

We are good friends Bob Zeches and Chad Richard, and this is a little bit about the history of Furthermore Wines. Friends and business partners since the early 90s, we began an exploration and education around wine together soon after we met, which continues to this day. Our shared tastes in wine have always centered around Pinot Noir, particularly from California and Oregon, and in 2006 when the opportunity arose we created our first two barrels of wine – about 50 cases of Pinot Noir. The fruit came from the Bohemian Vineyard in Freestone just a few miles from Nevina’s Vineyard, the estate vineyard in Occidental that we would eventually purchase in 2011.
Our mission back then was to begin conducting a long term study of how Pinot Noir diversely expresses itself regionally throughout California, particularly in areas influenced by coastal climates. All these years later it is still our main mission, producing Pinot Noir from vineyards up and down the California Coast as far south as the Santa Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County and as far north as the Yorkville Highlands in Mendocino county, including wines from our estate vineyards located in the Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley AVAs. Although we’ve grown gradually over the years and now make more than just Pinot Noir, we are still a relatively small operation making about 4,000 cases of hand crafted wines annually.

I’m back again with another rat report, tonight on a Furthermore 2022 Graton Ridge Chardonnay. This one’s a little hurried… I almost forgot to open this tonight. For some reason I had Wednesday in my head as the offer day, but about three hours ago I decided I should double-check the email… and saw the offer was going live in just a few hours! Well, it is a nice break from doing taxes.
One quick mention of bias here; I’ve bought Furthermore Pinot Noir twice, once the Graton Ridge, which I thought was excellent, and then their Russian River Valley, which is also quite good. So I must admit I’m inclined to like this from just seeing the label on the bottle. That said, let’s go down a list of attributes.
Color: a very pale, and crystal clear, straw color.
Aroma: I think this has a fairly full aroma, with some fruit and some herbal notes. It actually sets me up to expect a little butteriness.
Flavor: But there is no butteriness! Or at least very very little. The fruitiness and herbal bits are in here, but it’s brighter than I expected from the aroma.
Acidity: It’s got some pop, and a pretty crisp mouthfeel.
Finish: not especially long, but a little of the fruity notes linger.
The short version is, I like it. But let me know what I failed to write about.
Thank you Terry, and the rest of the Casemates crew, for the chance to rat this bottle!
