2022 Hook & Ladder Sauvignon Blanc, Olivet Ranch, Russian River Valley
Tasting Notes
This beautiful straw-colored Sauvignon Blanc from the “home vineyard” on Olivet Ranch shows aromas of white peach and honeydew melon. Full flavors of citrus blossom and passion fruit are heightened by lingering lychee with a trace of honey crisp apple.
The Vineyards
Sauvignon Blanc demands a cooler climate allowing the distinctive flavors of the grape to mature and develop. The southern reaches of the Russian River Valley produce just such conditions. These 30-year-old vines stretch along the front 5 acres of the Hook & Ladder Estate Winery on Olivet Road.
Our Sauvignon Blanc is crushed and de-stemmed immediately to press, and then the juice is fermented in a combination of neutral French oak barrels for six months.

Hook & Ladder Winery continues the legacy of one of Russian River Valley’s most influential wine families. Founded in 2003 by pioneering growers and vintners Cecil and Christine De Loach, and helmed today by their grandson, winemaker Jason De Loach, Hook & Ladder showcases the diversity of the appellation the family helped to define, in a portfolio of limited-production bottlings from their Russian River Valley estate vineyards. The name Hook & Ladder pays homage to Cecil De Loach’s 17-year career as a San Francisco firefighter.

2022 Hook & Ladder Sauvignon Blanc - $75 = 37.49%
My wife and I visited Hook & Ladder for a tasting several years ago (2016 or 2017). We ended up having them ship us a case of wine, including a couple bottles of the Sauvignon Blanc (the only bottling of SB they had at that time, I think). As I recall, it was a good variation on the standard California-style SB.
However, our purchases tend to dry reds (>90%), and there are enough California-style SBs in local shops that we haven’t needed to order more SB from Hook & Ladder in the years since.
However, my sister-in-law recently asked me to let her know if a good Sauvignon Blanc offer came up on Casemates, as she’s partial to that varietal and wants to stock up a little. If we get some rats here to confirm that this vintage isn’t too far removed from what I remember, then I may be ordering a case.
A friend whose taste I trust completely just emailed this: “This one is worth buying a case of if you like a clean crisp Sauvignon Blanc. I bought a case of the 2019 for $14 a bottle awhile back and liked it.”
There’s just not a lot of SB’s on offer, and I have been getting most of the offers for Mrs. WdD. Would love to see some rats, but got a case anyway - gotta trust WD …

@moondigger Nobody ratted this wine?
Nobody has any opinion at all? Not even the folks from California?

@SSteve I typically associate crisp with stainless steel. This one saw neutral barrels. Wish there were rats
