Long time buyer, first time Rat; I can NOT believe my luck of being chosen for this deal.
A quick pour, for science, tasted bright and complex, mineral laced, oaky, with big balsamic notes. After decanting for an hour or so ,,, the complexity remains regardless, along with very well balanced acidity, tannins, and earthy fruit.

Novaites or B’more folk, interest in splitting a case out? Otherwise I’ll consider a smaller purchase …
@bunnymasseuse i would do 3 bottle 1x2
@bunnymasseuse I’d be happy to split a case (B’more).
@bunnymasseuse
/giphy earthy-grouchy-actor
@bunnymasseuse do you have 1-2 bottles left to split? I’ll take them if you do!
@cduan you bet! Likely keep them in the 3pack style so let me know what you are interested in.
@bunnymasseuse @Zortapa so I’m confused. I thought I agreed to split with Bunny, buy now zortapa is writing to split. Help me figure this out.
Ahhh now the discussion may begin!

As a Spanish wine fanatic, this is a fantastic deal, and one you’d only see from Spain. Two decades aged wine for $20??? GTFO. 2001 is the winner, but 2000 was pretty good too. Riscal is an older, larger producer. Consistent quality. We drink their reservas pretty regularly.
@pjoeltyler since you know the winery could you comment on their style?
@klezman traditional Rioja, so American oak usage… vanilla, coconut, dill, tobacco, leather and red fruits. Gran reservas spend more time in oak, so I’d expect there to be more vanilla and coconut prominence.
Any idea when those tasting notes are from? For wines with nice age on them it would really help.
But these are probably right in my wheelhouse. Splits?
@klezman @scottw58
Wonder if Scott is as interested in Spain as Italy
CT TN’s are sure positive.
Must be BF and Black Tie as well.
@klezman @rjquillin @ScottW58 He was drinking that Garnacha the other day…
@klezman
@rjquillin @ScottW58 Scott helped get me on to some classic Rioja…
@klezman I’m done for a split if you’re looking for someone else to take some
@klezman @rjquillin
Of course I am! Really fun offer and great price nice work WD.
@klezman @swizzel @TechnoViking @ScottW58 @PLSemenza @Radiolysis @Cortot @FritzCat
Are all bottles allocated, or would a case to LA be helpful to spread around?
I could use a set or two.
@FritzCat @klezman @PLSemenza @radiolysis @rjquillin @ScottW58 @swizzel @TechnoViking none for me.
@CorTot @FritzCat @klezman @PLSemenza @rjquillin @ScottW58 @swizzel @TechnoViking I’m good. Not a lot of experience with Rioja and my cellar is way too full. Way.
@CorTot @FritzCat @klezman @PLSemenza @radiolysis @rjquillin @swizzel @TechnoViking
I have no room but I can take one set for immediate drinking
@radiolysis @rjquillin @ScottW58 @swizzel @TechnoViking
One set for Scott
I can do one or two sets, no real preference on which
Ron or swizzle - one or two sets remain. Only one case should come to my place. I don’t want a repeat on the Halcon offer.
@klezman @radiolysis @ScottW58 @swizzel @TechnoViking
Ok, FOMO got me and it’s already ordered but coming to SD, sigh, more to store.
So far, one Scott, one (or more) Klez, one (or more) me, pending.
@radiolysis @rjquillin @ScottW58 @swizzel @TechnoViking
Sounds good! Thanks Ron
@klezman @radiolysis @rjquillin @ScottW58 @TechnoViking I’m in for a set!
@klezman @radiolysis @ScottW58 @swizzel @TechnoViking
Done. All now allocated.
@pjmartin @mrn1@chipgreen I just grabbed a case because I’m not sure how many cases are available. This case offer has 4 btls of the 2000 and 8 btls of the 2001 so splits would be 3 btls at the same ratio! Let me know your thoughts! I guess this is my 1st & last online Black Friday purchase this year!
If anyone wants to opt-out, then we can look at other options.
@Boatman72 @chipgreen @pjmartin Count me in! I’ll take 3, or if no one else wants in I’ll take 6.
@Boatman72 @chipgreen @mrn1 Happy Thanksgiving to you all, and I will take a trio - sounds very interesting. Good job jumping so soon to ensure a buy Larry.
@Boatman72 @chipgreen @pjmartin If necessary we could grab a 2nd too!
@Boatman72 @mrn1 @pjmartin
I will take 3 if it helps round out a case but don’t get a second on my account.
This is worth it to me just to try it out. Thanks, Casemates!

2001 Marquis De Riscal 150th Aniversario Gran Reserva, Rioja Alavesa Spain
Happy black Friday all, may you all find the bargains you seek! I am a virgin lab rat and happy to join the pack:)
When the bottle arrived I was anxious to see what it was. My first impression was wow, they’re giving a newbie a top quality wine to report on, an old Rioja from a very well known producer. I had heard of Marquis De Riscal but didn’t know about them so I did a quick Google to see they are famous, quite old and highly regarded producer of Rioja which further piqued my interest.
I waited until about 10pm on Thanksgiving night to get busy. I hadn’t had anything to drink with my turkey day meal (I know what the hell is wrong with me!) and was ready for some sipping. When pulling up the cork, only about half of it came out on the corkscrew, my first reaction was “oh no, it’s corked”
After a quick sniff it wasn’t. I dealt with fishing out the remainder of the cork and poured a glass. A very deep burgundy coloring, I’m sorry I didn’t take a picture. Rookie mistake, boo me!
The very prominent nose was heavy on dark berries and tobacco spice – the kind of nose where I say, “this one is big and full bodied”. It has a silky smooth mouth feel, a muted palette of black cherry and dark berries. The long finish of strong tannins, almost slightly acidic. I’d guess the ABV is more than the 14% on the bottle as I felt it warming my insides as it went down, in a good way!
After about 40 minutes in the glass, the nose was less powerful and more refined. That wonderful silky mouthfeel remained, the dark berries melded with some earthy tones for a well-blended, mellow elegant palate. The long finish remained but far more muted.
My guess is that some restaurant group or distributor had a decent size quantity of this and wanted to move it before it lost its best drinking years and this is where Casemates entered stage left (I’m a lefty in case any of you were wondering why I picked stage left).
Overall it may be just a tad past its prime or heading in that direction, I say this as it doesn’t have some of the powerful palate notes that Rioja’s typically have, at least in my humble experience or I got too drunk to remember my experiences, also a possibility! Either way, it’s an elegant and pleasurable drink from a top producer that Rioja fans will savor especially at this $20 fantastic price point. I wholeheartedly recommend you pick some up with the caveat that you drink sooner rather than later.
@gkrivin WA says drink through 2036, FWIW
@gkrivin
Congrats on your first lab rat experience! Well done!!!
@pjoeltyler Thanks for the value add! It’s just my amatuer opinion
@kawichris650 Thank you
@gkrivin great Rattage my friend. What you described is everything a Rioja could ever aspire to be. Believe it or not, that is precisely how it is meant to be enjoyed… well integrated, appropriately aged. Tobacco and spice got me. Cheers!
@gkrivin Thank you for the review and for staying up past 10PM to do so.
@winesnob Thanks
@WCCWineGirl Thanks
Ahhh crap! WOW! Really guys!? You’re killing me!
I’m in for a case!
@winesnob You have never steered me wrong. Dang it, in for a case. Never had Spanish Tempranillo.
@danandlisa I shouldn’t have opened that email from Casemates
Am I going to regret not getting this? It’s 50/50 with me and experiencing a Tempranillo that I enjoy.
@TechnoViking See above post from @winesnob
@rjquillin Oy…decisions have to be made soon, I don’t see this lasting. Been up 36 hours back and forth between working and cooking, things are getting hazy.
@rjquillin @TechnoViking nobody makes a Tempranillo like the Spanish. Every now and then you find one of the stubborn ones who insist on keeping it until they feel it’s just right, even if that means waiting 20 years. I’ve ran into a few Bodegas that do this and I suspect this one is no different. If I wasn’t juggling multiple Black Friday deals, I would buy multiple cases. Use this as a benchmark reference Tempranillo in your cellar. For $225 there’s way more upside than down.
@rjquillin @winesnob alright, I’m in.
/giphy debonair-moaning-popcorn
@rjquillin @TechnoViking these two should make for a fun review. Thanks for hooking us up Casemates!
Dangit casemates… temp is one of the other halfs favorite styles… now you throw up a bottle from when she was still in high school… and yep had to grab the 3 pack.
/giphy humble-distinguished-shark
@MSUMike Casemates came out swinging with the big guns… Damn!
Marques de Riscal - Rioja Gran Reserva 2000
Long time buyer, first time Rat; I can NOT believe my luck of being chosen for this deal. A huge thanks to Alice for this special treat. Riojas aren’t common here on CM, let alone a bottle of anything with this kind of age on it.
I was greeted by Brown, who commented on my keen preparedness for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. The irony of my complete ignorance as to the contents of the delivery humored only me, I suppose. Expecting a nice rich new world Cab or CdP as a Black Friday treat, my ignorance led to excitement as I opened up the box to find a 20 year old bottle from one of the biggest names in aged Rioja!
The bottle was chilled around 40F when it hit my countertop in the morning, so I let it come up to temp (~65F) over the course of the day. Roasted wild pheasant, harvested just the week before, was to be an ideal pairing with this powerhouse red.
The cork disintegrated upon removal, leading to questions about storage and the vitality of the contents within, but I was able to fully extract without further issue and verify that the wine was intact. Visually, the wine presented super dark, inky, and mostly opaque with just a thin ruby red twilight around the edge of the glass. Initial aromas were earthy, herbaceous, and smokey. A quick pour, for science, tasted bright and complex, mineral laced, oaky, with big balsamic notes. After decanting for an hour or so, the acidity smoothes out slightly and tannins are gentle and well balanced. The complexity remains regardless, along with very well balanced acidity, tannins, and earthy fruit. The next evening: Aroma still strong balsamic, but the wine has opened well; more minerals, and a bit more sweet jammy fruit notes. I liked this wine a lot, but can see how the dryness and the richness might put off a more casual drinker.
This particular bottle has made the most of it’s 20 years of life, and is showing off the benefits of an artful producer of aged wines. It was interesting to read tasting reviews on the internet that were published 10+ years ago when the wine was far from new, but still had a ways to go on it’s journey. I would say that this wine is drinking well right now, could maybe survive another 3-5, and would be a solid offering with a rich holiday meal. I know I often have a hard time storing anything for 20 years, so here is an incredible opportunity to snag a case (for a great price, imo) with the hard work already put in.
Cheers, and Happy Thanksgiving, 'Mates!
@emribecky Thanks for the report and all the details.
I was drinking natty light at college house parties when these were made. In for a couple.
I’m in for a case; now I have something to go with my Pinxtos

@kasandrae good thing you’re up so (damn) early!
@ttboy23 you are, of course, welcome to half
Yep.

The entire Wine Enthusiast review on the 2000, seems to have gotten clipped a bit above
Dry and nicely oaked, with hints of fine aged cheese, campfire, dried fruits and leather. The palate is a little more fruity than the nose, but still it’s dry and tight, with raspberry and cherry flavors. While some acidity sits on the surface, overall this gran reserva is tasty, fresh and more than likable. Drink now through 2013. MS 11/1/08
https://www.winemag.com/buying-guide/marques-riscal-2000-gran-reserva-tempranillo-blend-rioja/
and WineEnthusiast on 2001:
Deep and earthy on the nose, with cedar, tobacco and plodding berry aromas. This is more full and thick than light and elegant; the palate is fruity and tannic, with plump plum and dark berry flavors. Chocolaty but monotone on the finish. Drink now. MS 2/1/12
Also a little retailer blurb, Wine Exchange, from 2018 that mentions two releases of the 2001:

@pete0744 ended up buying another case. Couldn’t resist.
Can’t let this go by. In for 3.
/giphy unattractive-elaborate-lamb
All out of 3 packs so…
had to buy a case.
/giphy puzzled-open-rattlesnake
It looks like my 3-pack purchase was just in time!
@StingingJ I’d be willing to take 3 off your hands
Anyone in the Atlanta GA area interested in a split?
@Springbank I would be in for a split. I live in town.
Anyone in SF interested in a split? I am down for 3 or 4 or maybe 6 bottles but not a whole case.
@davidj94112 darn I just picked up a three pack last night. I’m on the peninsula but am definitely on the lookout for casemate splitters up here. Keep me in mind for future splits.
@sdfreedive Will do! I semi frequently post looking to do splits so be on the lookout.
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: Tax & Shipping not included in savings calculations) Marqués de Riscal Rioja Gran Reserva Vertical - $43 = 16.03%
I was hired to do some work in Spain as a consultant. I ended up staying in this winery’s hotel. Wine and the room were unbelievable. I remember calling Jana telling her how wonderful it was and that I wished she was with me. Based on the lab rat reports, I’m in for a case. Happy Thanksgiving!
@ScottHarveyWine Thanks for chiming in with your experience there.
@ScottHarveyWine is the view from outside the hotel better?
Dang - I’d have been in for a 3-pack but didn’t order fast enough.
@DebRVA Same here but I convinced my wife to let me get the case and share some as Christmas gifts for our wine loving friends. Well played Casemates - upsell for the win.
Just when I think I have the willpower to say no more.
/giphy rickety-tiresome-pet
Y’know that thing where the deal looks really interesting but you’re hesitant for whatever reason, so you go to bed telling yourself that you’ll wait until morning to let the universe decide, and if there’s none left, then, oh well, it wasn’t meant to be? And then you wake up to a sellout, and your FOMO kicks in?
@Winedavid49, any chance of getting a few more 3-packs out here? Or in the alternative, anyone in NYC looking to split?
Talked me into it. Never tried one like this.
/giphy gaping-slimy-shadow
Anyone in the Boston area up to split or divide a case? Wanted the 3 pack but that is all gone
@djy2g33 did you end up getting a case? would split if you did
trying to get more 3 packs. but might be tough.
@Winedavid49 I’ve been on the edge, if 3 packs come back might push me over. Was hoping when I saw the soft cork there was a Casemates ah-so to sweeten the deal
Did anyone in Denver pick this up before the sellout and want to split a set or two?
@knlprez Someone did, judging by the map, but not me!
@CObrent
I saw the sellout, saw the map, and figured it was worth a post!
@CObrent @knlprez someone in Colorado but not in Denver (me) got a case. Big state, you know…
Gonna be a long remainder of Friday, unless @WineDavid49 finds Black Rabbit somewhere.
So much for a “24 hour sale”, under 14 hours; not bad.
@rjquillin honestly preferable to me. Justifies the early trigger finger
@rjquillin Maybe a 4:00, VMP only sale? You snooze, you lose.
I snost and I lost.
@rjquillin @rpstrong That’d be an interesting feature to add to CM.
@rjquillin honestly surprised it lasted this long. $20 for a two-decade aged wine of the highest designation from Spain is just bonkers.
@rjquillin most will pay $20 for 2018 generic Cabernet swill!
@pete0744 @rjquillin I feel the same way!
@rjquillin @rpstrong
Me too…had a bead on it, thought maybe 3…nope. At least i won’t have the stress of many lost cork-battles.
I’m wishing I’d thought to check Casemates this morning, this sounds fantastic.
We stayed here for our first anniversary, right around this vintage. To be honest, I don’t remember being that impressed with the wine there, but it was impossible to not get it because of those memories
Bought a case for my kids born in 2000 and 2001, with the caveat that they drink one bottle every 5-6 years, leaving the last for their 50th birthday. I’ll be hanging out with worms, but at least I planned ahead for their 50th!
@Thunderbums that’s awesome.
VAN GOGH! MANGO! TANGO! AWESOME!
@pete0744 @Thunderbums
+1
Now I wish I did the max, but very happy I snagged a case when they were available!
Is anyone having trouble with their shipment notification for this offer? My package appears to be lost in the UPS ether.
@danidani12 yes same here. Sent Casemates a note but no response yet
@shokes Me too. This is the order I have been most looking forward to as well. Really hoping we get updates soon!
@danidani12 Was supposed to arrive today (to Illinois), but this morning when I checked UPS, it said “Delay”, and “Check back tomorrow for an updated delivery date.” Lots of pressure on UPS right now-- holiday shipping, COVID, maybe weather. I hope it’s not a driver out with COVID, or a truck stuck in a snowdrift somewhere.
@danidani12 @shokes Mine is supposed to be on the truck for delivery later today.
@danidani12 @Mark_L Mine has been showing delayed for 3-4 days at least with no update. Just says to check back tomorrow.
@danidani12
Yep agreed, UPS is getting Hammered.
I got the Delivery Today Notice, then the Pending - check back later, followed by - The sender requested that we hold this package, all within 2 hours. Funny thing I go to check the mail and trip over a case of wine?? The next day pending switched to delivered.
@DickL @shokes Mine also says “Delay” without any additional updates or delivery estimates. I tried calling UPS, but they could not provide any additional information (like at all). The representative just kept parroting it is “delayed,” which is not really helpful. Are we talking a day delay? A week? Never to be seen again?
@PLSemenza wow - you are very lucky! I am worried mine will just slowly go bad in some unknown UPS location
@danidani12 @PLSemenza
Put me in the lucky category as well, cases delivered earlier this week.
@danidani12 @PLSemenza @rjquillin Mine were delivered today.
@danidani12 Now they’re estimating Monday morning (12/14) delivery.
Got mine today.
Any recommendations on what corkscrew to use for these bottles?
@danidani12
Probably an Ah So
@chipgreen thanks so much!
Got mine today as well. Everything looks good (unlike my last shipment that UPS mangled). Will report back after the tasting…
Anyone, other than the Rats, pull corks yet on these?
@rjquillin
Didn’t you get some? What’s the hold up??
@rjquillin Yes. The corks are a crumbly, but the juice is first rate.
@rjquillin Agreed on corks - only opened the '00 - looking forward to the '01 as that was an epic Rioja vintage. Lots of cigar box / cedar / vanilla - deep cherry with elegant rounded tannins. Bottle was gone way too quick.
Crumble, Crumble. Yummy Juice!
@KingKoopa
Ahhh, no ahso, or Durand.
@rjquillin quickly ordered one on amazon in preparation for the 2001s
@KingKoopa
There were some nice deals on the Durand before Christmas, may still be, but I don’t recall where I saw them.
@KingKoopa @rjquillin The Durand looks like overkill! Wow!
@FritzCat @KingKoopa
Got an older bottle, questionable cork?
Priceless!
Had both the 2000 and 01, both wonderful. The 01 cork was soaked and soggy and I feared spoilage but it was amazing. With great care I pulled the whole 2000 cork, with my trusty Woot Cellars screw, if I must say that night I was given divine patience. Don’t worry it hasn’t persisted!
Just had the 01 last night and hot damn it was wonderful. Drinks like an elegant, aged Bordeaux.
@winedavid49
Ended up with an extra bottle of the 2000; UPS got it.
Dropped in today to pick up the 15/16 offer that just arrived.
The guy (part owner) that ended up with the bottle opened it up a couple weeks ago with a friend of his.
He said it was likely the best bottle of wine either of them had had. He’s given up beer now, for wine, and blames me.
He got one each of the 15/16.
Just thought you’d like to know.
I was quite concerned when I opened this 2001 bottle, but after a two hour decant it is quite delicious!
@davidd13
Delicious I agree!
The cork was a mess, a little tight on pnp… But after an hour+ it was singing. Cedar chest, blackberry, chocolate. Smooth tannins, cutting acidity, lingering finish
These in-offer posts are the best.
Now I need to find a bottle and hit it up with the Durand!
