The world loves Amarone, and some of the most important wine critics in the world have also stated their admiration for this wine. Robert Parker once said: āOne wine that shines particularly bright in the Veneto is the mighty Amarone, where it is kingā.
This red blend from the Veneto region is one of the most unique and sought-after wine styles in the entire world. The process to produce this wine is complicated and delicate, which makes it a wine of impressive reputation. The grapes are dehydrated after being harvested, to later be fermented, and this is reflected in powerful, deep, and luscious wines! And just like James Suckling stated: āAmarone is a wine to drink with a lot of contemplation.ā
Complex and intense aromas of cherries, intertwined with the freshness of undergrowth smells. Bouquet of cinnamon, cherry jam, and a palate of ripe black cherry fruit. Nino Ardevi is the premium line of Progetti Agricoli. This brand is dedicated to producing varietal and DOC Veneto high-quality wines.
This wine pairs well with game, roasted or braised red meats, and mature cheeses.
The grapes are harvested around mid-September and naturally dried in boxes until January. In February the grapes are pressed and a slow fermentation begins, for 30/40 days. The wine then ages for 2 years in oak barrels followed by a long.

A little time limited so this will be a little short: This is my first try of the amarone varietal āĀ I am admittedly not very familiar with many Italian wine grapes but I do enjoy an old world red, however this bottle did not strike me quite as such, but more fruit forward, medium bodied. My (and my partnerās) taste is much more in the dry/earthy range. She actually noted it to be a bit bland (maybe from the lighter body) and while sensitive to sweetness didnāt find it to be very sweet interestingly.
On its own without food (to me) it had a bright, tart, almost sour/sweet puckering cherry almost candy taste. Alongside a heavy ricotta and basil calzone it was much more mild and cooperative, perhaps cutting the acidity and sweetness. I would say this wine is much more food-friendly than not, so as a decent everyday drinker alongside flavorful fares I could see the value. Ultimately, not blown away but not turned off.
Always appreciate the opportunity to rat! Thanks to all the CM crew!
Iāve never seen Amarone under $25 before, but what Iāve had has been some of the richest in flavor: so itās interesting this earned a āblandā description! But that does seem more like what youāre describing with the ācherry almost candy taste.ā
Iām interestedā¦ but now kinda want to see if thereās another rat report.
@worbx Based on reading about the technique, it sounds like itās quite possible this has room to age. I wonder if I was picking up on the natural residual sugar. Also interested if thereās other rats on this one!

2019 Nino Ardevi Amarone Della Valpolicella - $130 = 30.94%
Better Late then never
TLDR : Pick up a 2 pack at least
This is a great drinker.
PNP - Rather tight but still wifts of dark cherry on the nose.
Initial taste confirmed the cherry but pretty tight and dull.
After 10-15 minutes, more of the dark cherry was avilable and lead to a dusty, cocoa mouth feel with a medium to long finish
Over the next 30 minutes, you could really see it open up and get brighter cherry notes with some cinnamon, the tannin falls off but doesnāt die leaving it in a great place to drink solo. I ONLY wish i had some food on hand as I believe this would have been killer.
Leading into an hour of the bottle being open, you still get a very solid bright red fruits note. Maybe some strawberry coming on with the cherry. Or just the acid standing up. That finish hasnāt dropped off much even though it got lighterā¦ it just dances across your tongue with velvet tannins.
Iām in for at least a 2 pack maybe more if I can convience some DFW people to split a case. I know its late in the offer. Sorry. UPS Problemsā¦
Drink now or Hold multiple and drink over the next 3 to 5 years would be my suggestion.
@MSUMike Thank you for the review! Nice write up - and not all that late. The email has yet to go out later. You definitely latched on to more than we did. Makes sense it can be good to hold.
I havenāt tried this one, but I will say, any wine with a Luca Maroni score is instantly suspect. That generally means they paid him for such a score, and that generally means they thought they needed to in order to get a 90+ score of any kind. If anyone else here doesnāt know about Luca Maroni, google that s**t right now. And then stay far, far away from anything with his numbers proudly labeled on it.
@davebaxter42 Yesterday I saw an Italian wine that looked interestingā¦didnāt buy because it had a Luca Maroni score of only 92ā¦must be undrinkable!
@FritzCat Ha, I think Maroni scores are inverted - the lower the score, the less they paid him/wooed him, so he might just be being honest with those! And the wine might be pretty decent
Surprised and happy to see an Amarone on Casemates. Amador County Zinfandel with its uneven ripening tends to come in with a lot of raisins in the bunch and when picked ripe will develop Amarone characteristics. Therefore I have always enjoyed Amarone. Based on the second lab report Iām in.
@ScottHarveyWine Iām honored that I swayed you. Oh how I miss and need more of your wine. Your wine was some I cut my teeth on and learned so much from an unsaid former site. Jana. 1869 are some of my favorite wines (that 05 Janaā¦ Kiss of perfection even in 2018)
I hope to make an order with you soon sir.
Amarone is my favorite wine. Iāve never had one that I didnāt enjoy, and the case price of this is quite goodā¦great QPR. In fact we went to the Veneto Region of Italy/Lake Garda last Fall specifically to drink Amarones. If youāre on the fence and donāt know Amarone, buy a couple. You wonāt be disappointed.
In for a 2nd case. Because I would kick myself if I donāt have a case for myself at this price. I can truly drink this any day and not be sadā¦ With or without food. But it will absolutely shine over the years and I will hold some.
Alright
Anyone in dfw, if you want a few bottles. I have a few to share if you missed out. Let me know. Or. Iāll just keep all this great wine for years.

@james Thank you for the report! Although Amarone is not a grape variety, but a way of making the wine: check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amarone
