2015 - 90 Points and Top 100 Wines of 2017, Wine Spectator
To create Oberon Merlot, Tony sources grapes from Napa Valley’s renowned Oakville district. The deeper alluvial soils along with the perfect balance of cool mornings and warm afternoons make this the perfect location for growing Bordeaux varietals. Tony sources other red blending varietals,such as Syrah from Dry Creek Valley and Zinfandel from Middletown as they marry beautifully with this Merlot and bring out the rich character of this delicious expressive Oakville fruit.
Winemaking Notes
To naturally soften tannins and enhance varietal complexity, Tony allows the grapes to undergo extended maceration. He then presses the wine and transfers it to French oak barrels (45% new oak) to undergo a long malolactic fermentation for roundness and depth. Using Syrah and Zinfandel as blenders, adds a dark velvety feel to the lush berry flavor profile of the Merlot. Dense black fruit aromas are followed by blueberry and chocolate flavors, and supple tannins on the palate.
Specs
Vintage: 2015, 2016, 2017
Blend: ~88% Merlot, ~12% other red blending varietals
To create Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon, Tony sources grapes from throughout Napa’s finest winegrowing regions, including Oakville, Oak Knoll, Yountville, Chiles Valley and Capell Valley. By layering fruit from Napa’s sparse volcanic soils and the deeper alluvial soils of the valley floor, Tony accomplishes his goal of marrying many different expressions into one outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon that boasts a beautifully seamless mouthfeel and rich, complex texture and flavors.
Winemaking Notes
After the grapes are gently hand-harvested, de-stemmed and crushed, the Cabernet Sauvignon ferments in stainless steel tanks with an extended post-fermentation maceration. Malolactic fermentation with French oak, combined with 14 months aging (45% new French oak), helps to marry the wine’s flavors and tannins. During blending, Tony looks to other complimentary varieties to help express Oberon Cabernet’s lovely flavor and texture, such as Syrah and Merlot, to create Oberon’s deep colors, supple silky tannins, and vibrant black cherry, candied blackberry and spices. A hint of coffee and dark chocolate create a lingering and delightful finish.

@rjquillin “not bad” seems to be the general vibe. Looks like the older CS are more favorable per CT notes… With a bunch of wine coming in, I need something a bit more than mediocre. I still would love to hear what rats have to say about it!
@TechnoViking To be fair, SB is not at all in my wheelhouse. Last one opened was in '13. Should check again to see if I need to clear out some space. Bottles get lost here frequently.
@rjquillin@TechnoViking Totally agreed, until I actually tasked myself to document what I had did I realize how much my bottles were birthing like bunnies… I’m a horrible wine bunny mom. Ha!
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: Tax & Shipping not included in savings calculations)
Oberon Random Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot - $45 = 23.07%
Someone was kind enough to bring it to my attention that the ratio of Merlot to Cab is not the same for the smaller allotment vs. the full case. As such, I researched and found that there is a $2 difference in price for the current vintages of each wine. The Merlot retails for $23 while the Cab retails for $25 as you can see here.
So, technically there is more value in the full case than indicated by the savings percentage posted above. Those of you who prefer Merlot may beg to differ.
I still remember the Q4 holiday red blend that ped made on that other site. One of my favorite holiday wines ever. And this is $89 a case, pretty nuts.
@CruelMelody Super great price for the meh.com offering. Bought a case. Pedroncelli always makes food-friendly wines, and even Friends Red goes well with Italian food.
If I knew where I would be on Xmas, I would have jumped on this. I’ve bought this for the Xmas dinner table wine to accompany prime rib the past few years.
We still have a bottle remaining of the 2008 Oberon Cab Sauv Hillside Reserve from circa 2014 on the other site. That’s a really nice CS, but I’ve never been too impressed with their regular bottlings. Not bad at all, just lacking the power of the reserve (which makes sense I suppose).
Okay, I am going to be blunt and honest, because to be frank, I’m a bit pissed off.
I’m a long woot fan, and I was there when wine woot was created and sadly ended.
Over the past 12 months or so, I’ve become engrained to check casemates the moment I wake up, looking for those great QPR wines I’ve grown to love on woot.
Casemates is the first thing I do each morning, before I even leave bed!
Then, you place the old style fun blend wine on meh.com rather than here?!?!?! Am I not supposed to check casemates and instead check meh?
This site just did a big dis-service to this community.
And I am sorry to the winery of the blend currently on your site, this is nothing against you.
@Drez143 I think @WineDavid49 knew that we’d here about it, over hear. And if no one mentioned it first, he would mention it.
For him to “mix it up” a couple times a year to get people on one site more aware of the other, is good business. And good business is needed especially when your margins are low. And I want him to keep his margins low, and still stay in business.
Also, the Pedro mix is probably going to appeal more to the Meh audience then, say, an Oberon. Why waste the space here on an autobuy, when placing the offer on Meh might actually educate a few buyers? No rats for this blend, but plenty of good rattage for the winemaker.
I’m happy to see two offers today, instead of just one.
@chipgreen@Drez143@PatrickKarcher@Winedavid49
my apologies to the winery that is currently up and the fact this thread has been hijacked.
But I have to chime in…I also have several sites I check when I first get up. Meh being one of them. In the past the special holiday wine has been offered on meh so I don’t understand the problem? Also, you should be checking meh daily, they have some great deals. Thanks WD for taking more of my $$, I got a case.
Happy Holidays everone!
@Winedavid49 I don’t check meh. I just go on Casemates, check offers and that is that. I would have been really upset if I missed that offer as I have always looked forward to the holiday site-exclusive offers. I love the silly labels and of course, Pedroncelli at an amazing price! I feel lucky to have checked this thread and discovered the offer. I HOPE an email is going out to all casemates users. If not, that is where you are going to find some truly upset/angry people I think.
@DJZachAttack@Winedavid49 lol this thread cracked me up. The real takeaway for me is that I’m not the only one that checks this site the first thing when they wake up. #healthyhabits
@DJZachAttack@pete0744@Winedavid49 My version of checking this site is to refresh the forum list to see what’s new on the threads. And in the case of a meh wine offer, someone inevitably posts about it, on the Deals thread. (Today, that someone was me.)
I understand this is a sure sign I’m spending way too much time on this site.
@klezman where? I saw 1 merlot and 3 cab. Would stand to reason that’s the 4 pack and the case would’ve been 3 merlot and 9 cab. And the poll asked “how would you split the offer?” And one of the answers was “25% merlot, 75% cab (aka the way it is in the offer)”. It was clearly marketed that way.
1x Oberon Merlot, Napa Valley, California - Customer could receive one of the following vintages: 2015, 2016, 2017
3x Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa County - Customer could receive one of the following vintages: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017

@idontcarrie@klezman
Oddly, I don’t see it on the sale page at all. They only describe the 4-pack, so I see how one might expect the case to be a 9/3 split (as would be typical for offers). The only place I see the accurate description is in this discussion thread…if you scroll all the way up to the initial post with the full description of the offer. I totally get how some might be disappointed. @winedavid49 …FYI.

Why’s your holiday wine on meh? Is it delicious? Pedroncelli is the winery :0
@CruelMelody yeah, as I said over there, we need more information on that wine!
@CruelMelody 'cause WD knows we’ll find it there, here as well, and a much larger audience there; I’d guess.
@rjquillin yeah I hope they share more info! At least RS
I still remember the Q4 holiday red blend that ped made on that other site. One of my favorite holiday wines ever. And this is $89 a case, pretty nuts.
@Twich22 @CruelMelody @klezman @winedavid49
How does one say ‘thread hijack’ in Italian?
@rjquillin I mean, what did they expect??? If they didn’t see this coming then that’s their fault.
@CruelMelody Super great price for the meh.com offering. Bought a case. Pedroncelli always makes food-friendly wines, and even Friends Red goes well with Italian food.
@CruelMelody From Ed St.John: The blend contains some Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese, and Zinfandel… Tasty juice!
@CruelMelody sold out! Was able to get a case. Thanks for the heads up!
Thanks to Erunion for bring the holiday branded Woot Cellars style Ped. Sonoma Classico on Meh to my attention this morning. Grabbed two cases.
@CruelMelody So, I’ve been on the lookout for the holiday wine and now I find out I’ve missed it because it’s on another site?
If I knew where I would be on Xmas, I would have jumped on this. I’ve bought this for the Xmas dinner table wine to accompany prime rib the past few years.
@kookie00 it should make it by Christmas.
@Winedavid49 I could be in one of three states, so I don’t know where to ship it.
Hmmm…guess I thought it would be 3&9…bumper.

@Drez143 @PatrickKarcher @Winedavid49
I’m guessing the decision to put it on Meh is not made by @WineDavid49. At least, I hope not.
@chipgreen @Drez143 @PatrickKarcher i honestly didn’t think the decision to put on Meh would be controversial. man, i’m having a bad (gift) week…
@chipgreen @Drez143 @PatrickKarcher @Winedavid49
Shouldn’t be, just an unanticipated change up.
@chipgreen @Drez143 @PatrickKarcher @Winedavid49 As long as the shipping is free, I’m happy. In for one over there.

@Drez143 I missed it. I generally check Casemates and Meh daily but somehow missed Meh yesterday.
Why am I unable to add the 4 pack to my order? Total shows just the shipping amount of $8. Is this no longer available?
@Dinerb5 checking on this.
@Dinerb5
Works fine for me.
Is your state one of the 37 listed as available to ship to?
@chipgreen Yeah. I tried a few to see if that was the issue and neither SC or MI seem to work.
@Winedavid49 Working now. Order placed. Thanks!!!
FWIW, I really enjoyed the Oberon Chardonnay earlier this year.
I’ve always enjoyed Oberon wines
So meh is good wine one day and Christmas socks the next? What about sidedeal and morningsave? Any wine show up on those?
@TheOther1
Yup
Morningsave
@rjquillin @TheOther1 Nice, thx
@rjquillin @TheOther1 Oh sweet…thanks for the heads up! In for a case of 2016 Mentida any day! Especially for $99
Received my case of this juice today…here’s what was in the box: 1X 2016 Merlot, 4X 2016 Cab, 7X 2014 Cab
1 merlot and 11 Cabernet bottles? What a bummer.
@idontcarrie Bummer? It was clearly stated in the offer that the case was 1 Merlot and 11 Cabernet.

@karenhynes @klezman where do you see this??? Because when I view the page, it has the first part about 4 bottles but not about the case.
@idontcarrie @klezman
Oddly, I don’t see it on the sale page at all. They only describe the 4-pack, so I see how one might expect the case to be a 9/3 split (as would be typical for offers).
