2017 Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County
Our Mother Clone is a classic ‘Dry Creek’ Zinfandel with aromas of ripe blackberries and a touch of warm baking spices. This Zin is plump with jammy berry flavors combined with a touch of black pepper spice and notes of vanilla, and toasty oak. The spicy-berry dynamic so typical of Dry Creek Zin combines round tannins and a long, spicy finish which are a hallmark of our style. Enjoy now or cellar for three to five years.
2017 Signature Selection Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley
Aromas of rose petals, pomegranate and a touch of nutmeg greet the nose. A velvety light body embraces the hints of strawberry and plum fruit with spicy toasted oak notes. The wine has bright acidity, a smooth long finish and is balanced with mild tannins. An elegant and tasteful Pinot Noir.
2016 Pedroncelli Barrel Select Cabernet Franc, Dry Creek Valley
There’s a fragrant bouquet of cherry, mint and warm spice followed by flavors of red cherry, spicy oak, nutmeg and a touch of vanilla, all coming together nicely. The lasting finish is framed by medium tannins with notes of dried herbs, toast and spice.
Vintage and Winemaker’s Notes
2017 Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County
Zinfandel from the 2017 vintage was harvested over the first week of September. A solid winter of rain gave the grapes a great start. An uneventful spring was followed by a warm summer which bumped aromatics and flavors. As harvest time approached the warmer weather led to an earlier harvest. Concentrated fruit and high aromatics are
the result.
At the crushpad, destemmed grapes are transferred to a fermentation tank to cold soak for 24-48 hours and then are inoculated with selected yeast. Daily pump-overs and fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks with delestage regimes are done for maximum phenolic extraction. Following this the grapes are pressed and go to storage tanks until barreled down for twelve months of aging in American oak barrels. The addition of Petite Sirah (19%) adds depth of color and brings structure to the Zinfandel fruit.
2017 Signature Selection Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley
Destemmed and crushed grapes go to temperature controlled fermenter for 5 days of cold soaking at ~50F (pre-fermentation) with a daily pump over for extraction of color, aromatics and tannins. After that period fermentation starts. Fermenting at ~75F to better extract the aromatics of the Pinot Noir fruit, during fermentation we have a regime of three pump overs a day to achieve the right extraction, until dry. Then pressed and sent to storage tanks and later moved to barrels for aging. The round and polished texture of this wine comes not only from the high quality fruit but also judicious use of oak—the wine was aged for 8 months in small French oak barrels with 25% new oak.
2016 Pedroncelli Barrel Select Cabernet Franc, Dry Creek Valley
The even and very good growing season came equipped with plenty of rain. Slow ripening over the summer helped the tannins to soften and the aromas and flavors to excel. The vintage created very complex wines. The fruit was harvested the second week of September. Crushed grapes were transferred to the fermentation tank to cold soak for 24 hours and then inoculated with selected yeast. Daily pump-overs give the wine maximum phenolic extraction. Transferred to French oak barrels for 14 months with 30% new oak. Combined with the additional time in oak the tannins are softened and complex layers are developed in the finished wine.

The year was 1927. President Calvin Coolidge captured the imagination of nobody. Babe Ruth hit home run after home run powered by little more than whiskey and sausage. And John Pedroncelli, Sr. bought a vineyard and winery in Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County. Since then, four generations of Pedroncellis have weathered Prohibition, wine booms and busts, and changing tastes. And they’re still a family-owned operation making acclaimed premium wines. Wherever you are now, Sultan of Swat and Silent Cal, this next glass is for you.
@klezman@rjquillin Is your disappointment with the Pinot based on having tried it in the past, or is it just not a varietal you’re into? I have liked some California Pinots in the past (Carneros, mainly) and was wondering what Pedroncelli’s might be like.
@moondigger@rjquillin
Neither, actually. We love Pinot in this house and have a ton of it. I just prefer these other varieties from Pedroncelli and would rather have 3 of each to start drinking them in 5 or so years.
I think I’ve had a Pedroncelli Pinot once, don’t recall it either way. I almost certainly had it too young. Their wines need a few years in bottle imo.
@klezman@moondigger@rjquillin By chance opened up one of the Ped 2017 Pinots last night. It has been a while since I tasted a Ped Pinot so I ordered one in my last club shipment to check in. It was good-to-very-good. Not spectacular, but had nice fruit and some underlying earthiness. Certainly worth it at the cost of the deal.
@pedroncellifam@rjquillin Got it done, thanks Ed!
Now I just wait for the refund from here and I’ve got exactly what I was hoping for.
Y’all are always great to deal with.
@TimW
One of the advantages of having three octogenarians and an adult child living with you, someone is always at home to sign for your wine deliveries. #silverlinings
86 Points, Simple in red, rounded fruit, this is an approachable, value-minded red wine that spent eight months in French oak. Moderate structure keeps it fresh in the glass. VB 9/1/19
As I am too lazy to look - how many of these varieties have been included in past offers? (please don’t make me look at my account history, it makes my wallet sad).
@browncj7 you betcha–it’s not like I won’t be buying again within the next year. With the holiday offerings coming up (hint, hint), I’ll probably be able to use it in the next week! Cheers!
I’m pretty sure I’d kick myself for not ordering some Pedroncelli when I could; now if I can just fight UPS into delivering on a day I can actually be home…
I had just said yesterday that I was going to wait to buy because Pedroncelli might be coming up before Christmas, maybe for $12 per bottle. Maybe I need to go to Vegas! In for a case! Thanks Ed and Julie!
Ok, I ordered. Only to use my coupon! Honestly, I had no idea it was good for a year! Really Honestly! And yes, there will be room when it gets here. Really honestly! (Just practicing…)
Was the case gift in the box? My case was shuttled away far offsite, so i can’t check. But i didn’t know if i should be checking with UPS to see if i have another package there.
