2021 Pedroncelli Signature Selection Rosé, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County
Tasting Notes
Very aromatic! The aromas of rose petals and fresh strawberries are followed by flavors of strawberry and watermelon with a touch of spice. Nicely balanced between crisp acidity and refreshing fruit flavors. Our Rosé is made to be enjoyed upon release
The vintage had a good start to the year with even weather over the growing season framed by the drought and resulting in lower yields, concentrating the fruit. This gave the Zinfandel, targeted for the Rosé, time to develop and ripen. The block was picked on August 31st to keep the flavor profile, the sugars low, and maintain bright acidity in the grapes for a balanced wine.
Once destemmed and pressed, the 100% free-run juice is transferred to temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for a slow fermentation at 58 degrees F. The fruitiness of the zinfandel grape lends a rounded and balanced flavor in the wine. Bottled a few months after harvest, the wine captures the freshness of the vintage.
A Long Tradition of Rosé
When it comes to appreciating this style of wine we have it down to an art. We have been producing rosé since 1954 and have more than 65 vintages under our belt. We look for a style that captures the essence of fruit and is crisp and a touch spicy. The grapes for our Rosé were harvested from the Bushnell Vineyard, a longtime family source. The site’s well-drained rocky soils, hillsides, and excellent microclimate enable zinfandel to develop generous fruit flavors.

Since 1927, when John Pedroncelli, Sr. purchased a vineyard and a small winery in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley, two elements remain unchanged: the exceptional place the Pedroncelli family farms vineyards, and the family’s dedication to making fine wines.
The winery and vineyards are located in Dry Creek Valley, an American Viticultural Area we helped form. Renowned as prime land for grape growing, high-quality wines are the result. The climate, where the development in ripening grapes is protected from the heat by the marine fog intrusion in the evenings, is singular and unparalleled. Pedroncelli wines are regionally focused and site-specific and we’ve learned to pair the right varietal with the best place creating great character.
Nine decades strong, we are still family-owned and operated. It all adds up to tradition, heritage and a family of wines you can enjoy with confidence.

One day last week I received an email telling me that I had been chosen as a Lab Rat! Such fun news! Unfortunately, there was a delivery exception and my box was delayed until today, Tuesday!
Fortunately, ddeuddeg was able to get to the depot to pick it up. Once he got home, he opened the box and popped the bottle into the fridge as soon as he could. It was a 2021 Pedroncelli Sonoma County Dry Rosé of Zinfandel!
ddeuddeg decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to grill some shrimp and asparagus and top the shrimp with a sauce that he used on ribs the other day. He also prepared a couscous blend with onions, peppers, herbs, and a finishing oil.
Upon opening, the Pedroncelli had very fruity aromas, almost like sweet strawberries. It is a young, freshly bottled wine. This is a full-bodied, dry zinfandel rosé that is most pleasing to the palate. It is pleasant on its own, seeming very dry. It would be great on the porch during the summer with some light snacks. Food helps this wine to mellow out a bit. I can’t wait to see the offer! As ever, this is a true Pedroncelli and worth every penny!

Well Pedroncelli so why bother with blabber? Because why not?
Well first off this wine received Silver at the 2022 International Women’s Wine Competition (awards are Bronze, Silver, Gold, Double Gold and Best of Class)
Reverse Wine Snob featured this a few weeks ago, $13.75/bottle. They had this to say…“The 2021 Pedroncelli Signature Selection Rosé opens with delightful aromas of black cherry, strawberry, watermelon and roses plus a little bit of spice and a touch of earthiness. It’s a bit fuller aroma than typical for rosé and it’s a wonderful start!
Taking sip reveals a smooth and tasty wine with similar fruit flavors to the nose plus some continuing light spice notes. There’s a bit of blood orange in the mouth as well. Crisp and balanced, this is quite refreshing. It’s dry, but full of flavor. And as always with Pedroncelli, it’s absolutely delicious. It ends with a dry, juicy, tangy and long finish.”
And that’s it. Might have a go at this since it’ll be heading north not south…hmmmm…do we know about summer shipping yet?
@kaolis I love the Reverse Wine Snob. I have never regretted a Bulk Buy or Highly Recommended wine purchase. I don’t always think it is as good as he does, but at worst he is one step off - so it is still a good value. And sometimes I like his recommendations MORE than he does.
Not an official labrat report, since I was not the recipient of the sample bottle, but this is one of the benefits of being married to the right woman. As reported above, I had the opportunity to free this bottle from the handlers at the UPS Depot and have it ready to drink with dinner. After a grueling day in the hot sun, preparing and planting the vegetable garden, mowing the lawn, and then cooking dinner, this was the most refreshing thing imaginable. Lots of fruit, as expected for a wine this young, especially from the experts at Pedroncelli. This was not our first experience with their Rosé of Zinfandel, and we’ve always enjoyed it, but this one was exceptional. For those used to rosé from other grapes, such as Pinot Noir, Grenache, or even Cinsault, the Zinfandel Rosé from Pedroncelli is a bit more robust in flavor, but not overpowering. Great on its own, it’s even better paired with food, especially BBQ. At this price point, it’s simply irresistible.
P.S. I just read the notes kaolis posted, and they confirm what I said.
After pretty much giving up all hope we would see a mixed case of Ped Rose’/Friends White this gives me a glimmer of hope. In for two cases but still hoping the mixed case makes a return one day…
@Drez143@sosptuba I just ordered a case of the Friends to be available for this summer. I then looked back at the mixed offering here (Signature Rosé and Friends) from Feb. 2020 – $8.75/bottle!! Wow – that was a deal!!!
@Drez143@Mark_L@sosptuba
I drink mostly reds, although I have bought and loved Pedroncelli Rose and SB. Never tried the Friends white, and would probably go for a mixed case, even though I’m not generally a fan of Gewürztraminer which is in that blend. I did check my cellar and have at least 6 bottles of the 2019 Rose. Cracked one tonight, and it was wonderful. Need to pass on this one because I have no room.
I’m not a fan of bone-dry roses, especially if they’re tart. But I did buy a case of the Friends over on RWS. It’s a very pleasant poolside sipper with just enough Gewurztraminer to add some sweetness and flavor. I’ve also tipped our hairdresser with this Pedroncelli on occasion…also Inzinerator…gotta keep her happy.

@sosptuba
RWS put up a Friends White today. Six here, and six there, and you have your mixed case!
@sosptuba @Springbank Or wait a few weeks and it might be here a bit cheaper…
@sosptuba I personally think every casemates offer should just be a pedroncelli mix, but that’s just me

Don’t really need more rosé, but it’s hard to resist Pedroncelli. In for 6.

@Mark_L same
@kainc @Mark_L and the same. Plenty of rosé already, but this is too good to pass up.
