The 2021 vintage produced a concentrated and bold Cabernet Sauvignon featuring characters of strawberry rhubarb pie, black pepper, clove, and fresh blueberry. The palate leads to flavors of baked fig, mild cigar box, and blackcurrant framed by a bold, gravely tannin structure provided by a 10% blend of Petite Sirah. A touch of oak finishes the palate with an elegant balance between tannin, acidity, and body.

Nothing is more important than quality. It’s what’s in the bottle that counts.
At Slingshot, our singular goal is to bring you a great bottle of Napa Valley wine at a reasonable price. We’re not interested in perplexing you. Wine is about enjoying the experience.
Our attitude borders on irreverent. Slingshot is about putting your best foot forward while forgetting about fitting into the mold or following the rules. Be bold, be adventurous, choose your own path, and above all remember to have fun.
That’s what we aim for with every bottle of Slingshot. Great wine for sticking up for the little guy; even better for relaxing with friends.
All Slingshot wines begin with premium fruit from the Napa Valley and North Coast, much of it harvested from our own Juliana Vineyards where we strive through sustainable methods to grow quality fruit for generations to come. We don’t compromise when it comes to grapes because we’re committed to giving our customers sophisticated, approachable wine at a great price.
Slingshot is a family effort shepherded by James Stewart, Caroline Stewart Guthrie and family winemaker, Blair Gurthrie. Together, they joins their peers in focusing on issues surrounding sustainability, preservation, labor practices and maintaining family-owned businesses. Slingshot reflects the Stewart family’s ambition to preserve a vital family enterprise and practice meaningful land stewardship—both while producing fine wine from preimum vineyards.

I was so excited to get a rare summer Casemates notification from Alice! The box arrived and inside was a gorgeous bottle of Slingshot North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon. I had a couple of days before the review was due so I put it in the chiller.
The bottle is great. Nice label with a handsome logo. It’s something that would catch my eye if I were in a retail store browsing.
We had quite a spread and a large crowd with this wine, a going away party for a family member who is moving. While our surf and turf was cooking, I opened it and poured it into a decanter so it could open up a bit. You can tell when you pop and pour that this is young. The appearance is more similar to a Pinot Noir than a Cab because it’s a deep purple instead of maroon or red. Interesting.
I found the nose to be subtle. All I got was a bunch of warm bread with a nice backstop of fruit. I also didn’t get a ton of legs after a swirl.
Dinner was served and so it was time to pour the wine. First taste and I was struck. This is a warm but young and a tad sweet Cab. I can taste the bread that is on the nose along with some ripe fruit. It was a familiar flavor, I think it reminded me of an old-fashioned cranberry scone. There are some tannins here but they’re mild to perhaps medium. I did get a bit of a tinny finish that I could not put my finger on exactly.
I think this is a young wine that could develop some interesting complexities with some age on it. If you don’t want to wait, it’s a fun change up from a run of the mill intense Cab. All in all, we enjoyed it and it paired well with our meal. At this price point, grab some!

A few words from Reverse Wine Snob:
“The 2021 Slingshot North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon begins with a wonderful and intoxicating aroma of plum, blackberry, licorice and vanilla along with touches of chocolate, spice, cola and tobacco.
Tasting reveals lots of dark, really flavorful, juicy fruit in this rich, savory and delicious wine. Add in a smooth and lush mouthfeel and this is a fabulous, easy drinking Cab with a good amount of complexity too. It ends dry, quite long and persistent. A bullseye once again!..” 4/14/23
And Wine Enthusiast of course:
88 Points. A straight-forward, balanced and all-together enjoyable Cab Sauv that incorporates 10% Petite Sirah. Find notes of black cherry, black plum, prune, chocolate, Mission fig, blueberry and pencil shavings.
I think I remember these guys from my WW days. Been a while but recall it’s great to put out for a large gathering or going to your local BYO local restaurant - if lucky enough to have those.
I still love the cork too !
I still have a bunch in the “cellar”. I have found them to be a bit uneven in different vintages. Some I like A LOT, some not so much. Hoping that aging will be the ticket. Seems like these are tasting young - they are young. Just musing as to how much they will improve with age.

Slingshot Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
Labrat checking in, June 11, 2023 the year of our lord.
Look:
Dark ruby.
Nose:
Black fruit, Clove, Pepper,.
[heic images don’t work here]
Taste:
Cedar and black currant on the top.
Aftertaste:
Soft french oak.
The wrap up:
This wine has a dog gone nice balance between the acid, body, and tannins that make it a dynamic wine to enjoy over time.
I’m guessing this bottle is priced at around $20 in a Californian grocery store (guessing at the time of the tasting).
Bonus round:
You can reaarange the letters in “Slingshot Cabinet” to spell out “Stretchable Nosing”.

Haven’t seen this label here in a long while. It’s good to see a return of one of the QPR Kings from the old site

Interesting to see a bottle labeled ‘North Coast’…
@tercerowines albeit huge it is a designated AVA no?
@tercerowines you mean here? There’s so many of them out in the world.
@kaolis it is an AVA, just as ‘Central Coast’ is. The difference is that the former is not used nearly as often as the latter…
@klezman there are - but the term is not common in the vernacular of the average wine consumer…
@tercerowines I don’t even know what the average wine consumer knows. Most of them probably don’t even know what an AVA is.
@klezman @tercerowines
You likely know much more than the average consumer.
But that’s just the literal reading of your comment…
@klezman @rjquillin but…. Everyone knows ‘Central Coast’ - and it is so overused that it has very little meaning….
