It’s been over two years since we last did a Twisted Mystery Box on Casemates - it’s about time we did another!
This time around it’s very straightforward - you will get 6 or 12 random bottles (or more!) of properly aged Twisted Oak red wine, from vintage 2015 or earlier. And no duplicates - each case of 12 will have 12 unique bottles. You might get multiple bottles of the same varietal or blend but they will be different vintages (verticals! woo hoo!)
What kind of wines? These wines for the most part are what we call our Twisted Little Freaks - limited production single vineyard and premium blends that were initially offered to our valued Twisted Few wine club members.
You will find single vineyard Tempranillos - including a “Toro” Tempranillo we call The Bearded Dragon - our estate “Torcido” Garnacha, and our estate Graciano.
And in blends you’ll find, for example our popular “Parcel 17” blend of Mourvedre, Carignane, and Graciano. And of course there’s “Ol’ Chumbucket” - a description of which might best be left for the forums…
And there’s a slight chance a lucky few of you might even find a bottle of our flagship The Spaniard or River of Skulls in the box, but no promises.
For whatever reason we always seem to have a few straggler bottles or cases left after we finish a vintage. These delicious stragglers should be in people’s glasses and not gathering dust on our shelves! So grab a case or two while you can!
We’re often asked what the background of Twisted Oak is, to which we invariably reply, “The Sierra Nevada, of course!” If we are pressed further, we are forced to admit that Twisted Oak Winery is the culmination of a delusion, er, vision by Jeff and Mary Stai. The vision was of a terroir based winery making superior, hand crafted, yummy wines, and then having more Twisted fun than anyone in the industry selling them.
Jeff and Mary found 120 acres just outside Murphys in the Sierra Foothills at nearly 2000 feet elevation. It is there that they planted 10 acres of vineyards in Tempranillo, Grenache, Graciano, and Garnacha to take advantage of the continental Mediterranean soil types and climate. It is on top of this property, with an amazing view of the Sierras, where the state-of-the-art, no-pumpover, four-level gravity flow winery was built. When completed in 2004 it included open tank, stainless steel fermenters along with our own 300-foot barrel cave. This is all under the watchful eye of a 350 year old California Blue Oak tree that not only is our namesake, but also adorns every Twisted Oak bottle.
Jeff and Mary work closely with winemaker Scott Klann in crafting the Twisted Oak wines. Scott has been in the wine making business over 15 years. Scott’s knowledge of what works best is unmatched in the area (it doesn’t hurt that he was raised in Murphys.) Scott’s experience and personal relationships with the growers in Calaveras County allows Twisted Oak Winery to purchase the best fruit from these outstanding vineyards to complement our estate grape programs. Whatever the formula Jeff, Mary and Scott, have devised for Twisted Oak, it has been validated by the hundreds of consumers that buy us out of wine each and every year. Twisted Oak Winery has also received accolades by publications and competitions which have graced us with many scores of 90 or above. We think the Wine Enthusiast put it best “The gang at Twisted Oak Winery are taking winemaking in this area to the next level…” Cheers! And always, keep it Twisted! Twisted Oak Winery!

Throwing this out here-I’d love if ya’ll could get licensed for PA someday. I got lucky and ratted a past offering, and I would love to order more. Stupid state restrictions.
Love Twisted Oak!! Used to be able to get it shipped to IN, but not this time…which is probably good since my cup runneth over with my stash right now and another case coming soon. To all that are able to get it - Enjoy!
@eljefetwisted I have. Oddly enough I worked ten years at a tech company that did little or nothing to celebrate any holidays, yet inexplicably threw events and handed out swag for Talk Like A Pirate Day. I think I still have PTSD (Pirate Traumatic Stress Disorder) from that…
…but I digress. I gather it’s probably a wine of some kind, but that’s all I got.
@blandoon It’s named after one of the founders of TLAPD - Ol’ Chumbucket (the other is Cap’n Slappy). They came to one of our first Cave Looting parties and have been friends ever since.
One day for reasons best left forgotten it came to pass that equal parts of our Parcel 17 blend and The Spaniard were mixed together. The result was so good we went with it!
@Se7enty9 The difference between this mystery case and the last one is vastly different. I have never had a Twisted Oak wine I did not regret buying more of. El Jefe does not make a bad wine.I have been burned with mystery boxes in the past. I jumped on this one and am excited to see what I get.
@danandlisa@Se7enty9 Yeah, the last mystery box was an easy pass for me. Not this one. I had a 2015 Torcido last week that was excellent. I’ve never had a bad wine from El Jefe either and the Random (not mystery) boxes have all been great deals filled with Great wines. Violating ALL my capacity controls with this purchase.
@Se7enty9 I don’t remember exactly what the last one was sold as, but I have found el jefe to exceed expectations with these mystery/random/whatever cases.
I’d be all over this, but it looks like TN has fallen from grace and is off the ‘friends’ list. I got a refund yesterday for my 1-case Scott Harvey order “due to exceeding the personal shipment volume limit in your state for this winery” and now can no longer Twisted Oak, another of my top favorites. Boo, hiss.
@RRichmo if it’s like Oregon it’s per resident. That one caught me once and so I’ve been using other family member names to bypass that rule because well they’re drinking it too!
@sillyheathen my understanding is it’s not only a per person limit, but can now only be shipped directly from wineries. They’ve set us back 20 years for wine buying.
ARGH! Bittersweet pass because of funds. I have felt somewhat “burned” by mystery/random offerings, but not from El Jefe. I am happy to see them back, but it is just not the right time. I guarantee the reveals will make people regret not ordering.
@eljefetwisted I am just making my abstaining all the more difficult, but the better question might be, what is the oldest vintage one could possibly see?
@eljefetwisted, I have always missed Twisted Oak offers, not this time, even though had to order to a friend’s address in NY.
Is NJ always excluded by Twisted Oak?
No duplicates. Ok, good, so, say I’m rolling the dice looking for a Spaniard. Clearly won’t be two in a case, but could be two in two sixers.
You doing the packing, or WCC.
Trying to judge how those more cherished bottles may get distributed, and if the case still may be the wiser move for a higher percentage.
Not that all of them aren’t good. From past experience I know better.
Any Cockamamie? Still sitting on some of those 13’s, and an older Syrah.
@rjquillin No plans for Cockamamie in this batch. Here’s how we are doing this…
I am sending Casemates 12 bottle boxes of random wines no-dupes.
I have asked Casemates to only pull 12 bottle orders from a full 12 bottle box.
So if you order two sixers you might get dupes.
If you order two twelve-ers you might get dupes.
Good luck on scoring a Spaniard!

Well that was what I wanted to know. I was so on the fence of breaking the budget, but nope. Been down that road before. Someone is going to get 12 Spaniards and rest of people getting none. Nope. Don’t trust “random/mystery” to WCC. Sorry.
@eljefetwisted@KNmeh7 I’m with you on some of the mixed cases. Maybe I misunderstood - but sounds like mixed cases are coming packed, and will be split in half for orders of six? So should be impossible to get duplicates?
@KNmeh7 I am packing cases boxes randomly and transporting them to WCC. All WCC has to do is move them directly from the case boxes to shipping boxes. I am not asking WCC to do the randomizing, though the last time I did this I did let them randomize and they did fine as far as I can know.
Please everyone, when you are opening a bottle that is pushing 10 years from vintage date, use one of these “ah so” openers instead of a screw (or heaven forbid, and auger). It will save a lot of heartache. Thanks.
I met eljefe back in the day after a Gary Vaynerchuk event at crush pad in San Francisco. Partied all night with him and Gary. Had to take a bus back to the east bay since bart was closed. What a night. I have never had a bad twisted oak wine and have purchased every offer here since! IN FOR TWO CASES! Thanks Eljefe keep it up!
@eljefetwisted Any chance of getting this deal shipped directly from the winery to TN? Our “so fine” governor and his sell-out legislature just passed a bill that essentially eliminates shipping from third party (Casemates) shippers. I’m worried I’ve had my last Casemates delivery. Sucks to absolutely no end! My state senator told me “It was pushed by the liquor retailers and distributors. It is a bad law.”, as I suspected, and said he’d have his senior staff look for loopholes, but that may not help with Casemates. Sucks for us. Casemates folks- is there any hope for TN maters on your end?
@eljefetwisted Thanks and sodamnedsad. Fortunately, I have a few cases in the cellar, but now no way to replenish. CRAP! doesn’t even express my feelings. #SUCKASSTNLegislatorsell-outs.
In regards to the note about TN, you folks are the ones that need to stay ever vigilant. And write your state reps. So many states have such high permit fees, running to 100s of $$. This doesn’t faze the big boys but us small family wineries just can’t justify it. Most of the states I am not in want too much $$. Ask your rep why they hate small family businesses. Only if you push will it ever change. /rant
Absolutely! I’ve know and had various associatiations with my state rep for many years and will keep the conversation going on my end. I urge others (especially TN folks!!!) to do the same. It’s insane that lobbyists can
have so much influence over legislation that affects our lives.
@eljefetwisted How about MA for direct ship? Normally MA has been in for all of these deals (and your amazing past mystery cases via Woot)… Or no luck there either?
@djy2g33 We’ve never had a license for MA, not sure what happening there. (But at least we have moved on from the day when MA had a 14 license application including an essay question for each of your PARENTS to explain why you should be allowed to ship wine to MA. I hope I kept a copy of that someplace…)
@eljefetwisted It’s definitely changed… a full 180 in most senses. It’s actually rare that MA is not included in a deal nowadays… Too bad not an option this time around, I recently had one of the Syrahs from that Woot mystery case and was drinking beautifully…
Who else is here because they like wine and don’t give a flying F about Gary Vain ass truck? Seriously, what the hell happened? Do we need a Jersey social media influencer being mentioned multiple times? It is bad enough we got Suckling, but him? Seriously?
I will dye my hair tomorrow and talk aggressively while reviewing wine. My opinion doesn’t mean shit. (Except for labrat, thanks, Alice)
@KNmeh7 The influencer you have such hated for was mentioned in the context of meeting the producer. Not sure where your anger and vitriol are coming from, but it’s far more off putting than the post you reference.
@Drez143 I should have also added, that I threw my hat in the ring here as a new baby (pushing) gift for my wife. We have an appointment in an hour for the inducing of our third child!
I tried to resist but have always wanted to try eljefe’s wine and always miss it. What better way to try than 12 different bottles!
/giphy hypnotic-trusting-peacock
Say you have a storage locker in a ship-to state; CA for instance. You order and it’s delivered to them for storage. But they also offer delivery/shipping services, so it is later shipped to you. They are not selling it to you, just shipping wine you already own.
Does such a thing exist?
Is it legal, gray or totally black?
Shipping cost could be prohibitive.
@rjquillin I’m not a lawyer nor did I recently stay at a Holiday Inn, but it is state dependent. There are some states where bringing in your own alcohol in your own car is technically illegal.
@klezman@rjquillin@ScottW58 if bringing your own in a car is bad, wonder how my flights from MA to MI crossed that grey line… probably not a good idea to investigate further…
Have been a member of the “Twisted Freak Team” for many years, and these wines never disappoint. Was going to pause the wine buys (running out of space in the racks) but this is too good to pass up.
@cruzmantis Just ordered a 1/2 case. Really annoyed that UPS wants $9.99 per item to delay shipment. And apparently most UPS warehouses aren’t air-conditioned. With FedEx I could redirect for free to an air-conditioned FexEd Office store (formerly FedEx Kinkos) and they would hold for a full week (their 5 business days did not include weekends). Last time I had something sent to a for-profit UPS store, they told me there would be a “storage fee” for every day after the first, if I didn’t pick it up. AFAIK UPS stores are private franchises that can charge what they want. I think FedEx Office is corporate-owned. Wish we could pick delivery services, even if we had to pay extra.
Cases sold out
Was going to wait until my two half cases arrived this afternoon to see how the summertime styrofoam shipping worked out, but times a’ running out
/giphy flat-snarky-thief
@bunnymasseuse@eljefetwisted@rjquillin I’m down for ham chat. No-code General right now and missed Extra by one question since I didn’t study that book. Never really did anything with my license tho. Kinda like the scuba license I have too…
Cases are sold out. I bought 2x6 Bottles… @eljefetwisted, @WineDavid49 is it possible any more cases are available? not that I would complain about possible doubles, but I’d love extra variety and (of course) the lower price. Cheers!
I think my case is getting delivered to my wootlegger as we speak but unfortunately I won’t get it unveiled for a few days. The suspense is very real now!
@tofarber Nice batch! We ditched the capsules over the corks a few years ago. They really have no utility and just create waste. And now you can see the pretty tree on the cork end
Nice to see the reveals! If you still don’t have yours, there is a reason… we used a shipping company to get this large pile of wine over to Casemates/WCC to be shipped to you. When the shipment arrived it was short 31 cases!
We immediately assembled replacement cases and I drove them over to WCC in my SUV last Friday.
The cherry on top of the whole situation? The missing 31 showed up today at WCC!
Apologies for those of you who got dupes, we tried. It’s possible that the shipping company did a remix on some cases - for unknown reasons many of the 31 that arrived today were repacked. Or, it’s very possible we made a few boo boos packing the 31 replacements (it was kind of a rush job…)
Anyway, enjoy your mysteries! And feel free to drop me a line at tastingroom@twistedoak.com
Finally arrived! A bit warm to the touch but not hot.
2015 Partial 17 (is that partly from Parcel 17?)
2013 Zilch Tempranillo
2013 %$#@ (Potty Mouth Red)
2008 Ol’ Chumbucket
2015 Graciano
2006 Torcido Grenache (one of the old silk screened bottles!)
Wish I’d gotten those 2007 Parcel 17s that have been going around but this is a nice selection.
@eljefetwisted@normanl0 Oooh! Are you in SoCal? I want to come to a Parcel 17 Vertical Party!
(Just checked CT and very pleased to discover I still have a 2007 and 2x2009!!! YES!)
@normanl0@eljefetwisted - I just wanted to tell El Jefe that this is the best case of wine I have ever gotten from Casemates and that old wine site (have had 5 bottles from offer so far). By far the best offer I have purchased from Casemates and cannot wait for the next offer from Twisted Oak!
OK folks…I have not gone through all of the chats but…All of the wine from this offer is corked and or vinegar. Have opened 4 thus far and dumped all of them. Even saved for a few days hoping the would at least turn into something I could use in “something/anything”. Uuh!
Very happy with this purchase. I’ve opened 4 so far and they’ve all been beyond delicious. Friends that shared them think I’m some super magical wine expert. Thanks El Jefe!
I didn’t purchase because of funds, but these reveals have solidified that Twisted Oak, and El Jefe, are one of the best casemates participants. Hope to see another offer in a better position. These bottle reports are awesome!
I know this is an old thread at this point, but I’ve drank down 9 of my case in the last week (vacation and my wootlegger brought the case) and every single one has been good. They all taste similar after a while but all have been delicious.

@klezman Someone probably will. I’ve forgotten how to do the math though

@ScottW58 Great minds think alike.

How much more are you saving by buying a full case?

Waiting for more comments. The last mystery box and the bottle price tag has me cautious.
@Se7enty9 The difference between this mystery case and the last one is vastly different. I have never had a Twisted Oak wine I did not regret buying more of. El Jefe does not make a bad wine.I have been burned with mystery boxes in the past. I jumped on this one and am excited to see what I get.

@RRichmo Wow that’s pretty brutal.
@pmarin you bet! Totally sucks!
@RRichmo Dang!! What total BS. If i ever move from Florida, I had better check state laws to make sure I dont run into any stupid laws like that!
@mommadeb I think the ‘great state’ of Tennessee recently mucked up wine shipping. Yay for us.
After YEARS of ignoring the hype on el Jefe, I finally pulled the trigger on the last mixed offering. Loved every bottle. In for a case. Can’t wait.
I might be tempted if they shipped to GA
ARGH! Bittersweet pass because of funds. I have felt somewhat “burned” by mystery/random offerings, but not from El Jefe. I am happy to see them back, but it is just not the right time. I guarantee the reveals will make people regret not ordering.
Yay my internet is back! Anyone want to ask how long these will age?
@eljefetwisted I am just making my abstaining all the more difficult, but the better question might be, what is the oldest vintage one could possibly see?
@KNmeh7 That might depend on how many cases get sold here but 2008 is what I’m thinking.
@eljefetwisted
With enough interest, you may dig even deeper into the library?
@KNmeh7
@KNmeh7 @rjquillin We might need to, to fulfill all of the orders. But I also don’t have a lot of pre-2008 vintages.
@eljefetwisted, I have always missed Twisted Oak offers, not this time, even though had to order to a friend’s address in NY.

@rjquillin you starting a woot leg company?!
@rjquillin I’m not a lawyer nor did I recently stay at a Holiday Inn, but it is state dependent. There are some states where bringing in your own alcohol in your own car is technically illegal.
@klezman @rjquillin
He’s already got one or two, your house and cortots lol
@klezman @rjquillin @ScottW58 if bringing your own in a car is bad, wonder how my flights from MA to MI crossed that grey line… probably not a good idea to investigate further…
@bunnymasseuse @klezman @rjquillin @ScottW58 So many state lines crossed!
Happily @coffeemate12 and I are Twisted Freaks. Never met an El Jeff special we didn’t like.
Curse you @winedavid49 for making us pull the CC out again. At least the Dodgers swept the Giants…again.
In celebration of getting 6 more of these, I’m enjoying a Twisted Oak 2007 Petite Surah! Yum!
@klezman Only 1 left. Drink or hold?
@trifecta It was good last night. Not showing any signs of a dumb phase. Got some of it left for tonight as well. So yes, drink or hold
Got the email about this offer overnight. It’s a good thing for WD it’s my birthday and I got my bonus this week. Looking forward to getting this.
@ryannel Happy Birthday!
No MD?
I’d be in for a case if GA was included.
Have been a member of the “Twisted Freak Team” for many years, and these wines never disappoint. Was going to pause the wine buys (running out of space in the racks) but this is too good to pass up.
Anyone know whether these ship with FedEx or UPS? Want to order, but only if it’s FedEx delivering.
@cruzmantis UPS
@Winedavid49 thank you
@cruzmantis Just ordered a 1/2 case.

@TK4TWO1 giphy of people buying the last “import” Mystery case. Most didn’t fare as well as the sword-swallower guy.
Cases sold out
Was going to wait until my two half cases arrived this afternoon to see how the summertime styrofoam shipping worked out, but times a’ running out
/giphy flat-snarky-thief
Well - looks like cases are back
@tofarber Woooooo. That might mean The Spaniard or River of Skulls are coming someone’s way. Also, River of Skulls is my favorite Billy Joel song.
/giphy incandescent-disturbed-box
Whew, no MD. That was a close one! 2 cases on the way, rack full.
+1
@smtcapecod @kls_in_md we do have va leggers & DC rep on here… bout time for them to step forward for a reverse trip!

@bunnymasseuse @cduan @kls_in_MD @opiate2002 @smtcapecod @thelecroy @wardad I ordered a case to be sent to my brother in MN. I won’t get this until Fall, but if there are no DC collaborators, then I’ll split off a few bottles before the snow flies.

@bunnymasseuse @eljefetwisted @rjquillin I’m down for ham chat. No-code General right now and missed Extra by one question since I didn’t study that book. Never really did anything with my license tho. Kinda like the scuba license I have too…

The call sign K1VZX has been in my family since WW2. My father’s for at least 50 years and it’s now my son’s after my dad passed away. I really should get my license one of these days, having grown up with it.
In for a case and have been waiting on them to have an offer for 2 years now. Looking forward to some twisted oak.
@blublocker yea, it took me a while to get el jeffe back on board. thanks for waiting!
@blublocker @Winedavid49

@pjmartin That is tasting SO good right now!
@pjmartin And that’s pro lighting. Product photos are hard!
Resisted this one for almost both days, but finally decided to wootleg it to somewhere cooler and find a way to fly it home over the winter. Sigh
@deadlyapp Remember - “Ship your clothes, check your wine.”
@deadlyapp @eljefetwisted unless you need the clothes for cushioning, then it’s ship the clothes, wrap the wine and put it in dry bags…
@bunnymasseuse @deadlyapp the important thing is that it is easier to ship stinky clothes than alcohol. What a world.
One of the best parts of doing one of these are the “order number” giphys. Let me try an adlib: /giphy rubber-chicken-forest
@eljefetwisted guess it doesn’t work ad lib

Cases are sold out. I bought 2x6 Bottles… @eljefetwisted, @WineDavid49 is it possible any more cases are available? not that I would complain about possible doubles, but I’d love extra variety and (of course) the lower price. Cheers!
@Aureliano I will make my entreaties. It seems to me that anyone who bought a 2x6 late should really want a 1x12
@Aureliano pretty late in the game. Sorry.
@Aureliano @eljefetwisted will try.
@eljefetwisted @Winedavid49 Thanks! If not, 2x6 works, especially knowing that some additional Spaniard and may be out there. Cheers!
/giphy edible-husky-plot
I have word that you guys have kicked ass on this offer and I expect there will be more Spaniard (and *%#&@!) in the mix - woo hoo!
@eljefetwisted Thank you. We have missed you. Please come by more often.
@danandlisa @eljefetwisted AND work on that MD license! Please?
@eljefetwisted Can’t wait for all the reveals in the thread!

Received two 2014 Murgatroyds in my case. Just curious - did the high demand for this offer drive the occasional duplication in cases?
@mb1973 I had a duplicate in my six! So, maybe?
@mb1973 @wmhatch We did our best to randomize at our end - but there were unexpected challenges I’ll detail below.
@eljefetwisted @mb1973 not complaining. I promise! Besides I got a Spaniard so I win!

@chefjess Damn, that’s the jackpot for me! Parcel 17 is my favourite and you got three!!
@klezman
I’ve never had the Parcel 17 so now I’m even more excited!! Woohoo!
So my favorite bottle from TO is the torcido, and I got two including a 2005! So stoked.
In my six pack, I got:
2x 2015 Torcido
2014 Parcel 17

@Drez143 And you somehow got MY The Spaniard 2008! Can we speak to a manager??
@Drez143 check my rant above about the shipping

Any recommendations on where to start?
@normanl0
At the top
@normanl0 Nearly my exact same set! Just a Graciano in place of my Tempranillo Zilch. Cheers!
@normanl0 Start with the oldest, though a Parcel 17 vertical party would be fun!
@eljefetwisted @normanl0 Oooh! Are you in SoCal? I want to come to a Parcel 17 Vertical Party!
(Just checked CT and very pleased to discover I still have a 2007 and 2x2009!!! YES!)
@eljefetwisted @klezman In St. Louis, but I was thinking the same thing about a vertical party!
@normanl0 @eljefetwisted - I just wanted to tell El Jefe that this is the best case of wine I have ever gotten from Casemates and that old wine site (have had 5 bottles from offer so far). By far the best offer I have purchased from Casemates and cannot wait for the next offer from Twisted Oak!
Trying to go from memory, not a good thing:
2008 Spaniard
2013 *%#&@!
2015 Partial 17
2015 Bearded Dragon
2x 2015 Graciano
Not at all worried about the dupe on the Graciano. I have a '16 Graciano already, so i can drink one now and keep a mini-vertical for later!
Thanks @eljefetwisted . This was a fantastic idea and a fun surprise!
OK folks…I have not gone through all of the chats but…All of the wine from this offer is corked and or vinegar. Have opened 4 thus far and dumped all of them. Even saved for a few days hoping the would at least turn into something I could use in “something/anything”. Uuh!
@bullsugar1
I have opened 2 so far and so good, sorry to hear that.
@bullsugar1 That sucks. Care to share which bottles you received?
@bullsugar1 That sucks! So sorry to hear.
VAN MURALS! GROUND SQUIRRELS! SPIT CURLS! AWESOME!
I know this is an old thread at this point, but I’ve drank down 9 of my case in the last week (vacation and my wootlegger brought the case) and every single one has been good. They all taste similar after a while but all have been delicious.
