THAT REMINDS ME OF: How with the Boston Celtics it’s pronounced like “sel-tic” instead of, you know, Celtic. What’s up with that?

Well, we know today that “C” back in old Greek, Latin, and the Celtic languages themselves only had a hard pronunciation. However, the Celts stopped being identified as Celts at one point. And in the time between then and the sort of rediscovery of Celtic in the 18th century, languages changed. English around the Middle Ages and later started featuring “c” in words with an “s” sound. So the norm by the time it came back was to pronounce “Ce” like “Se” instead. Then the Boston Celtics were named before we normalized the original pronunciation again. Badabing, badaboom. You got the Boston “Sel-tics.”
