About Derby Wine Estates: “All of Derby Wine Estates wines are estate grown and produced in small lots at the historic Paso Robles Almond Growers Cooperative Building in downtown Paso Robles, California. Originally built in 1922 and recently renovated for use as our wine production facility. We own and farm three estate vineyards totaling over 400 acres, two in Paso Robles and a unique vineyard in San Simeon, California, less than a mile from the Pacific Ocean. We are family-owned and currently produce around 3500 cases a year.”

TASTING NOTES:
Implico - “Opaque ruby. Ripe, spice-tinged cherry and black currant aromas, along with vanilla and floral nuances. Broad and fleshy but lively as well, offering bitter cherry and dark berry flavors that turn sweeter as the wine opens up. Velvety tannins add shape to a long, smooth finish that leaves jammy black and blue fruit notes behind.” (AbV 14.8%, pH 3.77, TA 5.9 g/L, RS 3.4 g/L)

Fifteen 10 - “Ruby red in color, aromas of ripe plums, Bing cherries, chocolate, and tea leaves lead to an elegant structure with chalky tannins and linear acidity. The ‘Fifteen 10’ Red is named for the vineyard location on Live Oak Road in Paso Robles.” (AbV 14.4%, pH 3.52, TA 6.1 g/L, RS 1.9 g/L)

VARIETALS: Implico is 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 19% Malbec, 19% Petit Verdot, 12% Merlot. Fifteen 10 is 72% Grenache, 13% Syrah, 6% Cinsault, 5% Mourvèdre, 4% Counoise.

BARRELS: French oak, all neutral except some of the Syrah in Fifteen 10.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Derby Downs, the official track for the All American Soap Box Derby!

Beginning in Dayton, Ohio in 1933, the Soap Box Derby has been a yearly event drawing hundreds of kids to race in cars propelled by gravity alone. Very popular from the get-go, enough so that when the competition was moved to officially take place in Akron, Ohio from 1935 onward, a permanent race track was requested and built. Neat thing is that it was done as a Works Progress Administration project. If you’re unfamiliar, FDR created the Works Progress Administration as part of the New Deal, simultaneously employing a large number of Americans and setting up some major public works projects, which the Derby Downs happened to fall under!

Interestingly, the track is diminished from its original length. It shortened from 1,175 ft down to 953.75 ft by 1971, although it was brought back up to 989.4 ft after 2000.
