2017 Derby Wine Estates “Implico” Red Blend, Paso Robles
Tasting Notes
Opaque ruby. Ripe, spice-tinged cherry and black currant aromas, along with vanilla and floral nuances. Broad and fleshy but lively as well, offering bitter cherry and dark berry flavors that turn sweeter as the wine opens up. Velvety tannins add shape to a long, smooth finish that leaves jammy black and blue fruit notes behind.

Tasting Notes
Ruby red in color, aromas of ripe plums, Bing cherries, chocolate, and tea leaves lead to an elegant structure with chalky tannins and linear acidity. The “Fifteen 10” Red is named for the vineyard location on Live Oak Road in Paso Robles.
From planting a vineyard where no one thought grapes would grow to purchasing a building that would take 4 years and a small fortune to restore, Ray & Pam Derby have never shied away from a project they saw as worth-while, no matter how difficult it seemed to be. They bought their first vineyard with the intention of settling into an easy routine of growing and selling the fruit to local winemakers. Fast forward 20 years and Derby Wine Estates has 3 vineyards, supplies many local winemakers with high quality fruit, and produces a number of award-winning wines under their own Estate label.
All of Derby Wine Estates wines are estate grown and produced in small lots at the historic Paso Robles Almond Growers Cooperative Building in downtown Paso Robles, California. Originally built in 1922 and recently renovated for use as our wine production facility. We own and farm three estate vineyards totaling over 400 acres, two in Paso Robles and a unique vineyard in San Simeon, California, less than a mile from the Pacific Ocean. We are family-owned and currently produce around 3500 cases a year.

I spent a pleasant Father’s Day in the company of the 2017 Derby Laura’s Vineyard Implico. With no specific plans for the day I spent a mostly lazy day watching the Euro Cup and pondering anticipated wine pairings. No day drinking today as I wanted my mind and palate clear. When it 5 o’clock I popped the cork and let the rattage begin!
The color was a deep garnet with a translucent purple rim. Mostly red fruits on the nose with a hint of black fruit and spice. On approach it is fruit forward, medium to full bodied, with good structure and silky tannins. In the blend the red fruits predominate with plum and cherry but also blackberry as well. The tasting notes also mention anise but I only noticed this in combination with the basil in my food pairing. Although previous reviewers have described this wine as dry, full bodied, acidic, and tannic I think these descriptors have been somewhat amplified in the reviews. I found this to be very smooth, well balanced, and easy to drink. I was unable to identify specific varietal characteristics. Implico can be paired universally with both casual and fancy fare. Since the acidity is not overpowering it does not require a food pairing and can also pair in a wine and cheese or cocktail party setting. I was craving pasta tonight and it paired nicely with spaghetti and meat sauce and also with the milk chocolate for dessert. It has a medium to long pleasant finish, does not require cellaring, and is ready to drink now. Overall this is a well crafted and balanced blend and offers excellent qpr at the Casemates price. Will break SIWBM for this one.

Hiya Casemates! Long time no clink… Sorry I’ve been absent of late - life and all that. Thankfully, WD hasn’t forgotten about me; I was delighted to get the note from Alice last week that a bottle of 2019 Derby “Fifteen 10” was headed down my way.
I too recall the Derby Pinot offer from the old site, (that was one of the wines Neil found.) I’ve always liked their wines, and was looking forward to this one. (It’s always nice to see Cinsault and Counoise included in a Rhône blend!) I tasted over two weeknights this past week.
The wine has a nice, pretty strawberry color, which is exactly what I got on the nose. Reminded me the of strawberry Crush sodas I used to drink as a kid. Some herbal notes as well, but strawberries dominate.
On the palate, lots of red and black berry notes; it’s a juicy wine with decent acid and a touch of sweetness (the tech data confirms this). Tannins are super soft. Not overly complex, it’s a perfectly quaffable wine, a nod to the Côtes du Rhône. It was a nice compliment to my mid-week In-N-Out cheeseburger. I did save some for Day 2- no major development to report, and I finished the bottle without incident. I don’t think this wine needs any cellaring. Pop, pour, drink, repeat.
In summary, the Fifteen 10 is a great everyday drinker, especially at under $15 a bottle. As always, thank you WineDavid!
The siren song of the pros…well just one pro, some other thoughts behind those nasty paywalls…
Wine Advocate on the 2017 Implico:
84 points. The 2017 Implico has a medium garnet color and subtle, earth-laced fruits on the nose. The palate has somewhat muddled red and black fruit character and a touch of chew to the tannins. Drink 2023-2025 Erin Brooks 12/30/22

Its been awhile since I’ve seen Derby! The last pinot offering on the old site was really fantastic stuff. I’m looking forward to some rats!
