THAT REMINDS ME OF: Papes!

Sounds like pope. I mean, papists was used to refer to followers of Roman Catholicism because of their loyalty to the pope, or “papa.” In Latin, turns out papa can refer to any priest. The term became more exclusive as time went on, however, eventually referring solely to bishops and the pope, then solely to the bishop of Rome. AKA the pope.

Anyway, I was just thinking of papes as in the Painted Bunting. Also known as Passerina ciris, these brilliant little birds have all the colors of the rainbow on their bodies. At least, the males are. Female painted buntings are just green. So fancy are the males that the French literally call them nonpareil, or “without parallel/equal.”
