“Perfumed aromas of violets, blackberries, blackcurrants and wild herbs. It’s medium-to-full-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Concentrated and chewy with a savory, saline finish.” (AbV 14%, pH 3.7, TA 5.26 g/L, RS 2.5 g/L)

What the heck is a bonanza? Strange word, not something you see and immediately get the meaning of. If it weren’t used in everyday language, I’d be stumped. You might see the “bon-“ part and understand that means good in most Latin-based languages. But the “-anza?”

So it all started with two Latin words: bonus and malacia. A good, calm sea. Fair weather. A fortunate day for sailing. By the Middle Ages, it was contracted to bonacia. Then as Spanish came along, it transformed to bonanza, and it started to spread from just good luck with the weather to good luck in everything. Particularly, it became associated with finding a vein of gold or silver. From here it entered the English lexicon, and so any bountiful source of good things became a bonanza.

Did you know that there is an antonym to bonanza? It is a borrasca, stormy weather. Similarly was applied to mining apparently to mean a mine that no longer provides.
