2019 Durigutti Bonarda Clasico Red, Mendoza, Argentina
92 Points, James Suckling
Tasting Notes
Hector and Pablo Durigutti have long been passionate about the potential of Bonarda in Argentina and consistently craft some of the best examples produced in Mendoza. This wine stands out amongst its peers due to the use of low-yielding, late-picked fruit. We’ve found this a surprisingly perfect pairing with Italian-American cuisine – Think lasagne, spaghetti, and meatballs, manicotti….
Perfumed aromas of violets, blackberries, blackcurrants, and wild herbs. It’s medium-full-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Concentrated and chewy with a savory, saline finish. Drink or hold. – James Suckling

Hector and Pablo were born in Mendoza, the cradle of wine, and were raised together. Their childhood and their home were always connected to a sensorial world, with aromas, ingredients, and flavors that, over time, motivated them to choose the path to become enologists. As adults, they would find these familiar memories and similar passions. Since 2002 they have been dedicated to their project as a small family winery. Today the brothers have evolved to form the new generation of winemakers, leading an evolutionary change in Argentina’s viticulture. With that same spirit, the Durigutti brothers craft their wines and have started to write their own history, a family legacy, in a chosen place where they live and work daily with dedication.

Today I’ve the honor of ratting a Durigutti Bonarda for you all. It was delivered just today, so it had only a few hours to sit before I opened to taste, and I’m not even sure it had managed to warm up to room temperature. But here we go, anyway!
Back when I drank more South American wine, before Casemates spoiled me with a lot of good and inexpensive US wine, I saw Bonarda show up in Argentinan red blends. And while this is not the first varietal Bonarda wine I’ve had, I haven’t had many. Maybe just a couple. I recall enjoying them, but not so much that I’ve sought them out.
So let’s talk aroma. I get dark red fruit in the nose, a touch of alcoholic heat, and, well, hmm. The aroma seems a litte shut down, perhaps because of the cold. Not just that the bottle is still a little cold, but it’s a bit colder inside, too. Maybe I’m a little stuffed up today, too. Even time to come up to room temperature didn’t help much here. The aroma which is there is enjoyable, it just turns out not to be a big feature tonight.
Now the flavor is bigger. Red fruit is the star of the show here as well, albeit with brighter notes than what I get in the nose. Behind that is a little darker note that’s hard to pin down. I might describe it as something a little tomato sauce, a little molasses, and a little fruit juice. The tannins seem fairly smooth, light, and lend this a nice pepperiness, especially in the finish. Speaking of the finish, I find it a nice long one. It seems to linger a bit longer than many wines after taking a sip. The acidity gives me a just bit of a pucker, and is probably also responsible for making the fruit notes seem brighter on the tongue than in the nose.
The color in my glass is a nice dark red color, plenty opaque, but not inky black.
I feel like this has room to integrate and improve over the next few years. But it drinks nicely now, I think. If you love a nice big aroma with your wine, this might not be the best bottle. But I enjoy the flavor, and it went well with a spicy fried rice bowl tonight.

A note from reverse wine snob 11/30/22 who offered 6 packs of this for $72:
The 2019 Durigutti Bonarda opens with a pleasing, inviting aroma of dark fruit, lots of herbal and floral notes and a touch of spice.
Taking a sip reveals a juicy, tasty wine with some nice dusty/chalkiness to it. With good structure and a smooth and chewy texture that lasts all the way through the finish this is a crowd pleaser and a super easy way to try a new grape.
It ends quite long, dry and savory with a nice burst of spiciness. And just like the winery says, it goes great with Italian dishes. We found it to be just about perfect with a pizza…
I was lucky enough to get an email on Monday and the wine arrived late yesterday afternoon. I gave it a chance to warm up to room temp and popped it open while I was making dinner.
First thoughts: On the nose it is light. I got some leather, plum and tart cherry with maybe some tobacco in the background. As it sat open for a bit the aromas got a bitt stronger and I started getting some red fruit and plum in there.
The first sip held up to what my nose was telling me, but was more flavor than I expected. I got currant, leather, cranberry and tart cherry. There was just a slight tartness to it with some low to mid level tannins and nice clean finish. I poured a glass and let it sit for 20 minutes or so and the wine really opened up. I got a more full flavor, some stone fruits, plum, blackberry and red fruits. It had a good body and was quite full in the mouth.
I had only had Malbec from Argentina prior to this, so this was a new grape and wine experience, but I really liked it and am going to be getting a case of this!
Auto-buy…in for the case. Purchased the last two offerings and this Bonardo does not disappoint. Great everyday wine or group pizza night wine that everyone (novice to experts) seem to thoroughly enjoy. I think I actually end up giving away more of this wine than imbibe myself, sending folks home with a bottle here and there since they liked it so much.
@kls_in_MD I’m in the Springfield, VA area and I’d be up for splitting a case if you’re interested. I’m okay with driving 1.5 hours or so to pick up if you’re within that distance.
@ApplePI I’m in Ellicott City, so if we pick a non-traffic-y day, it should be within 90 min. I can probably find an excuse to get to DC or at least College Park…

Ha! I just had one of these from the mystery pack. It was alright. A little spicy/savory if I remember correctly.

Bonarda = Charbono
@FritzCat That’s what I was wondering. I’ve also seen other places where it’s a local name for Sangiovese.
Sounds like a good everyday red…and I just tonight finished a different case of everyday red. In for a case.

Just split a case with a B’more local!
If anyone in San Diego is buying this, I could take a few bottles. No space for a six-pack.
Just grabbed a case. Open to a DC-Balto split.
@kls_in_MD ->> @ApplePI may be interested, and I can drop it off to them if it’s easier for us to meet in MD first….
