Magnificent Malvasia

TASTING NOTES: “Peach and apricot aromas give way to vanilla and resiny oak notes. This blend of Viura, Malvasia, and Garnacha Blanca is full in body and has taken well to oak. Melon, green banana, and wood spice flavors are dry and elegant on the finish.” – Wine Enthusiast (AbV 14.1%, pH 3.5, TA 6.2 g/L, RS < 2 g/L)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Malvasia! Because it’s in this wine!

Ah, quite the storied variety. The name is rooted in an island fortress city and major trading post known as Monemvasia in Southern Greece. The grape wasn’t grown at Monemvasia, but a lot of Malvasia traveled through it to places like Venice, so an association solidified.

You may have also heard the name Malmsey before. This is the same grape as Malvasia, although today it primarily refers to Malvasia specifically from the island Madeira. While it was primarily an export from Greece, it would spread all around the Mediterranean Sea, including to Spain, and some Portuguese and Spanish islands.

Perhaps the most famous story surrounding the grape is that it was used to drown the dissident George Plantagenet, brother of Edward IV and Richard III, when he plotted various rebellious acts against Edward in the late 1400’s. What a way to go.
