2019 Fernández Gómez Selección Familia White Rioja
Tasting Notes
“Peach and apricot aromas give way to vanilla and resiny oak notes. This blend of Viura, Malvasia, and Garnacha Blanca is full in body and has taken well to oak. Melon, green banana, and wood spice flavors are dry and elegant on the finish.” – Wine Enthusiast
The Selección Familia is a house favorite white wine with Familia Fernandez. Carlos and his brothers love the ability of this wine to incorporate but not cover up the characteristics of each varietal.
Bordered by the River Ebro on the South and the towering Cantabria mountains on the North, the Rioja Alavesa region is home to the vineyards owned by family Fernandez Gomez, the majority of which are 80+ years old.
Located in the Jewish quarter of Labastida, the winery and family home are composed of four houses. In the earth beneath them exists a framework of four different caves dating back to the 1400s, an excellent space for the cellaring of the wines.

Happy Hot Weekend! Let’s see…not much to report. One minor thing, the Wine Enthusiast tasting note quoted above is for the 2015 vintage of this wine, not the 2019 being offered here today. Details, details…
I received this bottle on Wednesday and popped it in the fridge, excited to try something new. A quick search showed this is a blend of Viura, Malvasia and Garnacha Blanca, none of which I have ever tasted. 14% ABV.
The wine is a pale straw color. On the nose I got alcohol and maybe a little pear. It’s a dry wine, medium bodied and medium acidity. I tasted no fruit, just oak and alcohol, whether cold or room temperature.
Day 2 was much better. The alcohol seemed to burn off and I could taste some green apple and pear. It had a somewhat tart finish with some minerality. I drank it both cold and closer to room temp and actually preferred it cold. I did not try it with any food.
Thanks as always to Alice and WCC for sending me something new to try!
No doubt dating myself tremendously I quote my favorite comedy group “and now for something completely different”. First time lab ratting on a white wine and one that I can say with confidence my wife and I have never tried. Have had our share of rioja in the past but never of the white variety. And the three grapes that comprise the wine are ones I have never heard of. But on to how it tasted already.
Agree with the pale straw color observation along with my fellow ratter and the nose did not betray a lot of anything other than some pineapple and a hint of alcohol. Our first glass was before dinner and we both tasted a tart kind of peach flavor along with a certain resiny feel in the mouth. Almost like a greek wine in a way. At this point we were pretty undecided on our opinion.
Very surprisingly having it with dinner changed our impressions quite a bit. Grilled teriyaki garlic chicken thighs alongside gochujang eggplant with fried scallions(star of the meal and came from the new york times food section). The wine really stood up to the spiciness of the meal and smoothed out a great deal. Still cannot say we tasted a lot of fruit but something about the combination really clicked. And the high alcohol content was not noticeable with food.
Bottom line if you are looking for something to sip out on the porch this is not your wine in my opinion. However combined with the right meal I think the price point is enticing especially if you are looking for something quite different. Thanks Alice for the opportunity to try something new.

If you’ve ever had a Spanish Cava, you have likely tried Viura. It’s usually the main grape in Cava.
