THAT REMINDS ME OF: The ampersand.

Mostly because we’ve had two ampersand-using wineries in a row. So what’s up with the ampersand? What’s its deal? We’ve got all these characters in the English language representing either single letters or punctuation marks, and then there’s the ampersand over here, representing a whole word.

Ampersand’s symbol is actually pretty straightforward. It is a stylized “et,” like the Latin word. You know, the one that literally means “and.” Simple.

The etymology of ampersand is a little weirder. At some point, after the 1500’s or something, if you were going to talk about an individual letter that could also sound like a word on its own, like “A” or “I,” you would say “A per se A” meaning “A as in A.” And when you used to do the alphabet, they would include the ampersand symbol after Z. So you would end up with kids doing the alphabet and ending on “and per se and.” Which would cause people to start calling the symbol “ampersand” instead of just “and.”
