Necessary in many programming languages, but I also use them in text messages and such. I don’t often write them by hand, but I do love how the ampersand evolved from the Latin ‘et’.
If I am typing on my (Android) phone, sometimes I prefer just to type out “and” rather than find the (dim, small) key I can hold to create the & symbol, or take the effort to switch the keyboard from alpha to symbols and back to alpha.

I sometimes use ‘+’ as an “and” replacement, which is why my prediction for Wednesday’s wine, even before a clue, is Art+Farm.
