TASTING NOTES: “The nose on this vintage has juicy red apple, lychee fruit, dried stone fruit and hints of tropical fruit. THAT REMINDS ME OF: The Lost Roanoke Colony.

The lost colony was not the first colony to occupy Roanoke Island. The first colony ran into issues, including strained relations with the native Secotan people (who the colonists had over-relied upon for food supplies) and a hurricane that helped the colonists convince Sir Francis Drake to evacuate them.

A second colony was established in 1587. Unfortunately, the mainland tribes had formed an alliance that was hostile towards the English at that point. The governor was asked to return to England for assistance and supplies later that year. He wouldn’t return for another three years, in 1590. When he came back, the colony was cleared out of all its people and supplies.

Nobody knows what happened. The prevailing theories are that they were either killed by the hostile tribes or managed to integrate themselves with a local, less-hostile tribe, like the Croatan. Some people suspect something supernatural, but that’s all pretty far-fetched.
