About Laurent Miquel: “The vineyards at Laurent Miquel in Languedoc have a history of winemaking that goes all the way back to 1202, when the monks of Abbey de Fontcaude first began growing vines there. Today, alongside his wife Neasa, Laurent Miquel is the 8th generation of his family to work these vineyards and is known for growing varietals not normally grown in the region such as Syrah and Albariño. His winemaking philosophy is to respect the past, but constantly try to improve upon it and as a result, has created some of the most elegant French wines in the region.”

TASTING NOTES: “Solas Pinot Noir is a well-balanced, food-friendly wine with medium body and light, bright berry flavours – red cherry, raspberry and blackberry. THAT REMINDS ME OF: Quantum of Solace, not to be confused with the original Ian Fleming short story “Quantum of Solace” which has very little to do with the movie.

“Quantum of Solace” as a short story is entirely James Bond being told the tale of a civil servant and a flight attendant by the Governor of the Bahamas. The civil servant finds the flight attendant cheating on him, so he gradually cuts her out of his life until he essentially strands her Bermuda with unpaid debts. The phrase “quantum of solace” refers to the act of retaining the tiniest amount of care and consideration for another individual. Once the quantum goes to zero, all consideration for the individual as a person is gone, and that is when people commit the cruelest acts.

How does that relate to Quantum of Solace, the movie? It seems to pretty much only be rooted in the concept of a “quantum of solace.” At the end of Casino Royale, Bond feels betrayed by the woman he loved, who then died, leaving him with a lot of unresolved feelings. So I guess the idea is that he’s looking for a “quantum of solace” both toward her and in life in general. The film’s heavily about the pursuit of revenge and whether getting that revenge actually brings you peace, or a “quantum of solace.”

And because naming the film Quantum of Solace only for that concept and having it be completely unrelated to the original short story is probably confusing for a general audience, they also decided the bad guy organization should be called “Quantum,” which would later be revealed to be a subsidiary of Spectre.
