« Solas » is the Irish for ‘light’ and in Old French means ‘joy’, ‘pleasure’, and ‘enjoyment’. Our Solas wines reflect the purity, balance, and light-handed approach that characterizes Laurent’s approach to winemaking.
Solas Pinot Noir is a well-balanced, food-friendly wine with a medium body and light, bright berry flavours – red cherry, raspberry, and blackberry. Smooth on the palate with aromas of garrigue strawberries and rosemary and hints of Indian spiced tea on the finish.
Night-time harvesting, pre-fermentation cold soaking between 5-7 days to extract maximum fruit aroma. Fermentation up to 25-26 degrees alternating plunging and pumping over. Aging in stainless steel tanks with 20% aged in 1 -2 year old barrels.
Delicious with traditional charcuterie or Bouillabaisse. Ready to drink. Serve between 14°C and 16°C.
We are eight-generation winemakers. So we’ve got history. That history informs but doesn’t dictate what we do. We respect the past, but constantly try to improve upon it. By always looking for better, more natural and sustainable ways to harvest the world’s most elegant French wines. We are Laurent Miquel.
The vineyards at Laurent Miquel in Languedoc have a history of winemaking that goes all the way back to 1202, when the monks of Abbey de Fontcaude first began growing vines there. Today, alongside his wife Neasa, Laurent Miquel is the 8th generation of his family to work these vineyards and is known for growing varietals not normally grown in the region such as Syrah and Albariño. His winemaking philosophy is to respect the past, but constantly try to improve upon it and as a result, has created some of the most elegant French wines in the region.

This wine was pretty good day 1, we guessed $20 Pinot.
Overall smells were of berry and cherry fruit and maybe a little bit of earth/mushroom and leathery/oaks
Taste wise, cherry was predominate towards the candy/sweet side of the cherry spectrum. No tannins, very fruit forward Pinot. Maybe a little vanilla
Day 2 - this was not as good on day 2 - still very candy cherry type flavors. My wife didn’t want any after the first sip on day 2 so probably better wine to finish up on the first day. Wish we had a chance to pair with some food but it didn’t work out this time.

Hello Casemater! Lab Rat reporting for duty. My apologizes for the late report, I misunderstood Alice’s email, and thought the offer was going live tonight. Without further ado, let’s get into the rattage.
My SO and myself let the wine rest for a couple days in the cellar. We tasted from both our standard universal glasses and pinot noir specific glasses. We both enjoy and regularly drink pinots with a preference toward old world styles, and bottles with some age.
The bottle and label are elegant and understated. According to the label the wine is from Languedoc in the South of France. We are not familiar with this area of France but are excited to try a wine from this region.
We let the wine warm from cellar temp on the counter for an hour before opening. The agglomerated cork had some light staining but no creep.
The wine was clear, free of sediment, and a dull garnet color with no bricking and no appreciable legs.
On pop and pour, the nose gave off cherry and was slightly floral. The palate was similar to the nose with light red fruits.
After some air, the nose resembles cherry and vanilla, with hints of sweetness. There was a little dust on the finish from the universal and more fruit forward flavors from the pinot glass. The most flamboyant attributes were dark red fruits, prominent cherry and high acidity. The wine finishes short, and slightly harsh without any tannins.
We recorked two glasses worth of wine for the next day in the refrigerator. On day two, the universal gave way to fresh cherries and ripe raspberries on the nose. The palate was very mellow and enjoyable, with a finish that was smoother and longer. The wine held up well and was very satisfying. From the pinot glass there was a bit of an acetone flavor but a deeper and more expressive nose. Unfortunately, the palate has more acidity and the finish wasn’t as enjoyable.
My SO and I both really enjoyed the wine and agreed that we would be happy to pay $25 for this bottle from a local wine shop. Anything under a casemates price of $15 dollars a bottle represents good value and we feel this wine is a screaming deal at under $8 dollars a bottle for the case price. If you like a restrained and lighter style of pinot noir, then this deal is absolutely worth purchasing.
As always thank you to Alice, Winedavid, and the rest of the casemates crew for the opportunity to review this bottle.
