Mermaids have been a “thing” in various capacities for thousands of years. At the very least, aquatic humans have appeared in the folklore of pretty much every group of people living by a body of water, although they don’t all quite line-up with how we imagine a “mermaid.”

The Japanese ningyo is usually just a big fish with a person’s head.

Some aspects seemed to be oddly consistent, however. Mermaids and their like were commonly seen as omens, mostly of incoming storms at sea. In some instances, they cause said storms. They also tend to be associated with seduction, because guys everywhere like fish, I guess.

Interestingly, the creatures known as sirens in Greek mythology became conflated with mermaids over time. In the earliest myths, the sirens were large birds of prey with the heads of women who sang hypnotic songs. Yet, approaching at least the third century BC, they would occasionally appear more like mermaids in artwork. This was despite there being an existing creature in Greek mythology that matched the more common descriptions of mermaids: the triton or tritoness, named for Poseidon’s son Triton. Guess they wanted to consolidate.
