So “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” had a troubled recording process. It was McCartney’s brainchild, inspired by the increasing popularity of reggae in the UK and a phrase often said by a Nigerian conga player he knew named Jimmy Scott-Emuakpor. Scott would later try to claim some ownership of the song due to his association with the main phrase, but despite likely getting it from Scott, because where else, McCartney said no. Scott continued to pursue credit until giving it up in exchange for covering his unrelated legal bills.

Lennon hated the song. He called it “more of Paul’s granny music shit.” During a recording session, he played his own version in frustration, and that would be what they eventually went with. But not until after Paul made them try something else first… again. And even after getting it done his way, Lennon still hated it. Unfortunate that it was a hit.
