Hot Off the Press

TASTING NOTES: “This wine is dark garnet red in color with distinctive black currant and plum aromas lingering with nuanced cedar, violets, leather, and cigar box notes. The mid palate is an enveloping soft berry cobbler with brown sugar, nutmeg and a lengthy smooth finish. Enjoy now and for years to come.” (AbV 13.6%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: “Hot off the press.”

It turns out printed media has been hot for some time. Whether 19th century newspapers or something off our modern printers, that paper always feels warm.

For modern printers, it’s because (as long as it’s not an inkjet) of toner. Made up of granulated plastic and a few powdered minerals, toner is melted onto paper to form text as it moves through the printer. Thus, warm paper.

For the older news printers, in addition to printing presses operating hot, the phrase “hot off the press” might refer to hot metal typesetting. Originally, you’d have to manually place the type sorts, letter by letter or word by word. With the invention of the Linotype machine, you could actively cast the type for each job with molten metal. The operator types on a typewriter-esque keyboard, and the machine does the rest. So you could literally get the hot metal fresh off the Linotype and put it on the printer.
