The scene in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland where playing card soldiers paint the roses is often thought to be symbolic of the feud between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. Lancaster had a red rose crest, and York had a white rose crest. The Red Queen, in turn, could be seen as a Lancaster ruler, who would somewhat justifiably see white roses as treason… Well, kinda.
