Due to the combination of a global pandemic, big strides in facial tracking and virtual reality, and the increased prominence of “streamers” online, there has been a notable spike in the popularity of a weird niche of streamers known as “vtubers,” a portmanteau of “virtual” and “YouTuber,” because they use a virtual avatar rather than their own face/body. Most are just independent individuals doing their own thing, but a couple agencies have actually popped up to coordinate and market them, including hololive, who have had the most success in the West lately.
