THAT REMINDS ME OF: Character Select. Or Selection.
Fighting video games have come quite a ways. The first one to offer multiple different characters with different play-styles was Street Fighter II in 1991, and the player had eight choices: Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Zangief, Blanka, Dhalsim, and E. Honda. As of Street Fighter VI in 2023, there are 28 (including extra downloadable characters). Mortal Kombat in 1992 started off with seven playable characters. In the confusingly titled Mortal Kombat 1 of 2023, you’ve got 22 in the base game and an additional 12 downloadable ones.
And get this. Super Smash Bros. in 1999 had 12 playable characters. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate from 2018 had a base roster of 74 with an additional 12 added. I don’t know where the Smash Bros. series goes from there, but we’ll probably find out in the next couple years…
