About Tercero Wines
Larry Schaffer IS Tercero Wines. Once upon a time, he worked in the ever stable “music” and “publishing” industries. He soon realized that he desired more from life, perhaps more of a challenge. So, he went back to school, faced down humanity’s age old foe “The Sciences,” and emerged with degrees in both Viticulture and Enology, leading to a promising future in wine. A year after he moved to the Santa Ynez Valley and worked as enologist for Fess Parker Winery, he took the plunge and started making his own wines under a personal label: Tercero Wines.

TASTING NOTES:
Grenache - “100% Grenache from this smaller vineyard located just south of the city of Los Alamos in the new Alisos Canyon AVA; the site gets quite warm during the day but stays cool at night, leading to grapes that show off soaring aromatics yet still retain nice acidity and wonderful structure; fermented 100% whole cluster, foot stomped by Larry, fermented with the stems and aged for nearly 3 years in older French oak barrels, unracked until just before bottling; a big, bold Grenache that is not shy but is true to form for a Grenache!” (AbV 15.5%, pH 3.65, TA 6.5 g/L)

Petite Sirah - “This Petite Sirah comes from the La Presa Vineyard in Santa Ynez. It was my first and only year working with this site - but that may change in the near future based on how this wine has developed. The grapes were destemmed, fermented, pressed and then aged in 4+ year old French oak barrels for nearly 3 years and unracked until just before bottling. It’s dark and inky and, though approachable now, its best years still lay ahead.” (AbV 14.5%, pH 3.6, TA 7.0 g/L)

Mourvedre (Thompson) - “The grapes for this wonderful wine are from the Thompson Vineyard, located just south of the city of Los Alamo and were picked two weeks later than all others during the warm and early 2013 harvest and came in on Halloween day. The grapes were foot-stomped by Larry, fermented 100% whole cluster, pressed and then aged for nearly 3 years in older French oak barrels, left unracked until just before bottling. This is a bold take on this earthy variety and will reward you with a unique and wonderful wine to enjoy now or lay down for years to come. Only 2 barrels were produced and this is last call…” (AbV 14.3%, pH 3.7, TA 6.4 g/L)

Mourvedre (Larner) - “I share this block with Michael Larner himself and it is always the ‘most challenging’ of blocks that I work with, struggling to ripen and produce a decent amount of fruit each year. The Larner Vineyard is in Ballard Canyon AVA. These grapes were picked in mid-October, destemmed, fermented and then aged in older French oak barrels for nearly 3 years before bottling. Only 2 barrels were produced; since 2013 was a very warm year, this is more fruit forward than usual but still retains wonderful earthy components that make this variety my favorite to work with (well, one of my favorites!!!)” (AbV 14.5%, pH 3.75, TA 6.2 g/L)
