100% Grenache from this smaller vineyard located just south of the city of Los Alamos in the new Alisos Canyon AVA; the site gets quite warm during the day but stays cool at night, leading to grapes that show off soaring aromatics yet still retain nice acidity and wonderful structure; fermented 100% whole cluster, foot stomped by Larry, fermented with the stems and aged for nearly 3 years in older French oak barrels, unracked until just before bottling; a big, bold Grenache that is not shy but is true to form for a Grenache!

2013 tercero Petite Sirah, Santa Barbara County
Tasting Notes
This Petite Sirah comes from the La Presa Vineyard in Santa Ynez. It was my first and only year working with this site - but that may change in the near future based on how this wine has developed. The grapes were destemmed, fermented, pressed and then aged in 4+ year old French oak barrels for nearly 3 years and unracked until just before bottling. It’s dark and inky and, though approachable now, its best years still lay ahead.

ph: 3.6
Total Acidity: 7.0 g/L
2013 tercero Mourvedre, Thompson Vineyard
Tasting Notes
The grapes for this wonderful wine are from the Thompson Vineyard, located just south of the city of Los Alamo and were picked two weeks later than all others during the warm and early 2013 harvest and came in on Halloween day. The grapes were foot-stomped by Larry, fermented 100% whole cluster, pressed and then aged for nearly 3 years in older French oak barrels, left unracked until just before bottling. This is a bold take on this earthy variety and will reward you with a unique and wonderful wine to enjoy now or lay down for years to come. Only 2 barrels were produced and this is last call . . .
Specs
Vintage: 2013
Varietal: 100% Mourvedre

2013 tercero Mourvedre, Larner Vineyard
Tasting Notes
I share this block with Michael Larner himself and it is always the ‘most challenging’ of blocks that I work with, struggling to ripen and produce a decent amount of fruit each year. The Larner Vineyard is in Ballard Canyon AVA. These grapes were picked in mid-October, destemmed, fermented and then aged in older French oak barrels for nearly 3 years before bottling. Only 2 barrels were produced; since 2013 was a very warm year, this is more fruit forward than usual but still retains wonderful earthy components that make this variety my favorite to work with (well, one of my favorites!!!)

The idea for Tercero wines surfaced a number of years back. Larry Schaffer had been in the music, education and trade publishing industries for a number of years and had achieved all he had set out to do. It was time for a change… but to what? His first thought – a professional volleyball player? But alas, Larry is simply a bit height challenged, so it was time for Plan B – get into the wine business. The initial thought was to go into wine sales, but his thoughts quickly turned to challenging himself and taking on classes he never wanted to take as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley – those dreaded science classes. Not only did he take them on but he conquered them, transferred to UC Davis, and got his Master’s Degree in Viticulture and Enology in 2005.
After graduating, Larry and his family began a new chapter in their lives, relocating to the Santa Ynez Valley, where he became Enologist for Fess Parker Winery, a well-respected winery that makes a LOT of wine. Why here? The winemaking community was willing and wanting to help each other, but more importantly, it was simply an incredible place to raise children and live life!
A year after starting there, Larry was ready to ‘take the plunge’ and start buying grapes to make his own wines! It was scary and challenging at the same time – no matter how much you read about it or do it for others, it’s quite different when it’s ‘your own baby’… But it was also a way for Larry to ‘marry’ his past with his present – to use his sales/marketing skills along with his technical winemaking skills to see what he could produce . . .
@Zortapa@jclarkie78 … so @smtcapecod and I originally planned to split, so I’ll ping smtcapecod separately and see what we may have left (finally caught up to all my threads…. So many wines, too little space…
@tercerowines Sorry, I wasn’t trying to overlook it! Hoping to push some people to visit your region. I’ll be there in 2 weeks and definitely stopping in, hoping to try some of that Watch Hill
@tercerowines I want to just get the case myself because I love all those varietals, but my wife might kill me if I get a whole case with our current wine stock. But 2013? Ready to drink and could last cellared?
@Apache6131@pseudogourmet98 Crap, I thought you said to put in a case order so I got one too, but I have another possible split as well, so we’ll work it out!
@cbrehman@pmarin I’m totally down for a split but wouldn’t be able to purchase as I already have three cases in the wings that I purchased for splits. the three way split would be amazing though. If either of you buy I will happily throw a Benjamin at you via the Venmo.
@cbrehman@sillyheathen I already ordered a little bit ago so I think we’re good. Also I think have part of a split with one of you already in progress but as far as I know not shipped yet.
Damn! Better than club offerings and I know I’ve got at least some of these at home. Gotta figure out whether we can handle additional…
In any case, buy with confidence! Larry makes great stuff!
Edit: we’ve got 2 or 3 of each of these already! Mostly at higher (but still reasonable) prices. Guess I’m out this time.
@tercerowines And it’s great! You should do another!
molarchae and I are excited to try your Pinot, too. Let us know if you need any “unbiased” opinions
@tercerowines when do you think full swing for the travelling winemaker dinners will be? And selfishly, when in San Diego? Saw on Instagram you were just down this way – I hope you enjoyed it!
@tercerowines I’ll bite on a wine related question – what draws you to making a specific variety? I’ve heard of brewers making beer styles they don’t particularly like either for the challenge or to better appreciate it.
@tercerowines with your single vineyard stuff, how do you make those connections? just keeping your ear to the ground and hearing about spare grapes? or do you seek out those special places?
I had the opportunity to sample the 2013 Mourvedre. I had it with two other guy that I regularly get together with and have bottle tastings. Important note! We had previously tasted through 3 bottles of Burgundies prior to trying Tercero’s Mourvedre.
So I drink on the regular with a couple of friends, where we each bring a bottle of a theme and taste and report them. This was a different night in that we brought Burgundies, we are not normally fans of continental wines, and really enjoy Californian styles. So to try Larry’s Mourvedre was very interesting, and we even had it to try against an 84 Cote-Rotie by Verenay-Ampuls?
On to the tasting! On pop and pour it was a dark garnet clear and bright. It had medium legs and the nose was gamey. One of by friends likened it to a roast turkey that was crisp.
On to the taste, I got a meaty savoury quality that wasn’t bad. It was interesting in that there was a mouth watering aspect there. Not very tannic. My friends both thought it fine but not particularly complex, I’d agree with this assessment as the early taste was savoury and nothing else yet.
We tried this with some BBQ pistachios and I thought this was amazing! The meaty savoury flavors worked will with the smokey sweet flavors of the nuts. I’d say for a summer BBQ wine you’d be hard to make a better pairing. I’m not sure if a syrah would do better then this,
As time went on the wine went softer but still savoury. I’ve saved a bit for tomorrow to see how it developed. Oh it’s sealed with a screw cap which makes it easy to do this.
TBH looking at the prices of $27-32 a bottle if it’s great QPR but I don’t think the bottle is a disappointment if that makes sense? It’s great for summer BBQ’s and you’d love it for that but I’m not sure how well it’d do for other occasions.
Oops I forgot to mention the 84 Cote-Rotie was totally gross and undrinkable. It was cloudy on PnP and tasted like it had been inoculated with a bacterial sample not fit for human consumption.
a mystery (revealed) Petite Sirah bottle of tercero
We enjoyed this wine with a cheese plate. Medium bodied with a complex smooth and velvety mouthfeel. Lots of oak spice on the nose, along with crushed raspberry. Tart strawberries, black cherries, some heat, baking spices, and a medium length finish. Fruit forward with a vanilla finish. This wine needs some time to open making it quite enjoyable. Deep fruit flavor really balances out the high alcohol. I would recommend this wine to drink now or sit for another 5 years.
@MarkDaSpark but will I see you in the next year??? Still waiting on the Bernardus PN from last year! Lol It is comforting to know they are in temperature controlled storage though

tercero wines reds collection - $60 = 16.66%
@deneed4spd these are both small lot, single vineyard offerings showing off the unique characters of specific sites. The 2014 SBC is a blend of 3 sites - Larner, Camp 4 and Zaca Mesa Vineyards . . .
@tercerowines Since you’ve got 2 different single vineyard Mourvedre, makes me wonder how you decide which wines to have in your portfolio. Do you think “I’ve gotta have a Mourvedre, which vineyard should I use this year”? Did you have 2 empty barrels and Mourvedre was first in your alphabetical “to do next” list? (or was Michael Larner having a yard sale to unload excess grapes;)
@KitMarlot great question. I search out sites that offer some kind of uniqueness - and that certainly applies with Mourvèdre. Larner is an awesome site - and i was fortunate to take over half of a block of Mourvèdre that I share with Michael Larner himself.
@KitMarlot my portfolio of wines is also a bit of a moving target - i need to consider what i have in barrel, what i have in bottle that has not been released, and where i want my brand to go. It’s not a simple answer . . .
@tercerowines Where do you see your portfolio and brand in another 15 years? And how does that line up with customer demand? Since you’re not a Chard/Cab Sauv shop, i’d imagine you have a smaller but potentially more loyal customer base.
@radiolysis Another great question. Thank you! I do have a pretty loyal following and I’m very proud and humbled by that. I’m excited about my journey over the next 15 years but cannot give you any specifics because I kind of play it vintage by vintage. For instance, I started making pinot ad cab franc in 2020 and we’ll continue doing so this harvest as well.
Just yesterday I was discussing with @KitMarlot how I’ve got dollar value thresholds that I generally adhere to, but that there are specific wines I kinda disregard that for when it comes to these offers. I’m glad to say @tercerowines has crept its way into that category. Now @KitMarlot and I have to figure out how to equitably split the lots of three in the case. Pistols at dawn?
@rjquillin I don’t get it. If they agree in advance and know the wine is coming, it should be their responsibility to do this. If they don’t, that’s another story. But if I were the powers that be, I would be pretty disappointed and take them off the list for any future opportunities.And as a wine maker, I’m not very happy because I Gave bottles away at my cost.
@rjquillin@tercerowines I know the last time I was a rat, I only got communication from WCC about ten minutes after it was delivered. Fortunately I am crazy about checking UPS so I was aware anyway…
@tercerowines@WCCWineGirl
Yup, that’s a problem when it’s all last minute.
“overnight” shipping just isn’t for the past year or so.
A few days allowance can make all the difference;
especially for the Friday one-day.
@rjquillin@tercerowines@WCCWineGirl E.g. I’ve got rat duty coming up for the new site (divvyup) and thankfully it wasn’t for this offer. Despite the next day shipping, we were far too deep into the wine already after a work happy hour that by the time it arrived around 8:30pm we’d have been unable to give it a fair shake. UPS for me is reliably at the very very very end of the day for some reason.
@klezman@rjquillin@tercerowines@WCCWineGirl New site??? Is it something related or is it a competitor we’re probably not supposed to talk about? I need more wine sites! not.
@tercerowines Hmm. does that mean you know something we don’t? (well, I’m pretty sure you do) or just commenting that the re-witching hour (switchover hour) coming tonight.
@klezman This is actually annoying. Stop pushing the wine sales. klezman said 3 hours ago:
Why isn’t this sold out?!?!
Come on people, BUY ALL OF THE WINE!
@klezman this all goes back to my original comments about a group of people on this site that try to steer folks in one direction. Perhaps this is by design, perhaps it isn’t. But it never happened a few years ago, and it is annoying.
@klezman@Turner103200 I kind of remember it happening even on the W site, and I kind-of liked it. After a while you’ll get familiar with some of the usernames even if you never meet in person, and get used whatever type of sentiment they may commonly like to write about. And like with friends, which we kind-of are, you tend to accept what they’re saying even if you find it a bit annoying, and take it how you wish.
@klezman@Turner103200 I mean we are talking products with production of 2 barrels here. Not a high-volume commercial industry.
If I think of wine hype I found annoying, it was probably the excessive promotions and write-ups from Cameron Hughes, which I dabbled in about 10-15 years ago and eventually dropped out.
@klezman@Turner103200 Last point: there is also some sort of satisfaction in getting a sell-out. Obviously for the winemaker and WCC, but yes I think there is some degree of “we did it!” together. Which in the end is just for fun and not really useful, just like clicking the facey-icon on the Meh page each day so you don’t break your streak.
@Turner103200 I’m sorry that you find my honest opinions of this wine offer annoying. But you should know that I’ve known Larry for several years now, have many cases of this wine in my cellar, and it’s the only club we’re actually in.
So yeah. I’m going to tell people how much I love his wines.
One thing I will never do, though, is hype a wine or winery I know nothing about. I’m not a shill and I’ll never push a wine I don’t know.
Just so you all know, each if these wines are going into my ‘library’ after this sale is over - and prices will be increased on each. Just saying . . .
@tercerowines
I did my job, first sale I believe. Case for me to split between my Idaho and Utah residences. Fan of your wines since the long ago W**T days.
@tercerowines Not at all related to the wine, but the name Tercero kept sounding strangely nostalgic to me. Then I remember it was the name of the dorm complex I lived in for my first two years at UC Davis.
You didn’t by any chance get your Vit / Enology studies at UC Davis? It’s amazing when talking to winemakers in the Northwest, I found that close to half of them had some association with that program.
@pmarin yep, I lived in tercero for 2 years as well - F Building. I did not get my undergrad degree from UCD but did go back and get my MS in Viticulture and Enology there . . .
We opened the 2013 Mourvedre, Larner Vineyard, about 3 hours ago. The first taste was not good. I cannot remember having a 100% (or whatever the percentage to be called the grape, even though it appears this 100%) Mourvedre. So we have tried it 3 hours later, much better. But we can say it is not a favorite and would not buy again. Not sure how the price allocation was among the wines, so hopefully the other wines purchased with this offering are much better for the price. And possibly we do not care for the grape.
@free2day33611 Larry also generally recommends a significant decant on his reds. The 3 hours you gave it seems like a good start.
Mourvedre isn’t for everybody. It can be a rather wild tasting grape with more funk than average.
@free2day33611@klezman That’s part of its appeal to me – it can be wild and meaty and herby. Same profile i like in Syrahs. And probably why i like Grenache the least of the popular Rhone varieties.

@cbrehman @sillyheathen I already ordered a little bit ago so I think we’re good. Also I think have part of a split with one of you already in progress but as far as I know not shipped yet.

@KNmeh7 you could count me in, although I’m checking in late and I’m also calling a sellout
@tercerowines I’ll bite on a wine related question – what draws you to making a specific variety? I’ve heard of brewers making beer styles they don’t particularly like either for the challenge or to better appreciate it.
@radiolysis i dig the uniqueness of all the varieties I’m working with - including Pinot from the Sta Rita Hills and Cab Franc as of 2020
@tercerowines with your single vineyard stuff, how do you make those connections? just keeping your ear to the ground and hearing about spare grapes? or do you seek out those special places?
@radiolysis great question. I seek out specific vineyards like Larner and Watch Hill and Camp 4 - sites that provide me dynomite grapes!!!
@radiolysis and I’m a nice guy and try not to burn any bridges . . .
@tercerowines are you active in the farming decisions at all?
@radiolysis not too much. I know my strengths, and let those qho know what they are doing do what they do . . .

@kawichris650 great question. Though each of these are 2013s, they are still young. They are all better on Day 2 . . .
@kawichris650 in other words, seriously buy with confidence . . .

@smtcapecod Petite Sirah, Santa Barbara County
@BCwine Thank you for the rattage
No Michigan. Too bad. I had 2 bottles of Tercero from a previous offer and promised myself I would jump on the next one.
@ElKabong sorry - tricky state these days . . .
@ElKabong @tercerowines They’re having a grand ole time suing different wineries lately.
@deadlyapp @ElKabong indeed they are. Gotta follow the rules - and find ‘legal’ ways to get in . . .

@deneed4spd these are both small lot, single vineyard offerings showing off the unique characters of specific sites. The 2014 SBC is a blend of 3 sites - Larner, Camp 4 and Zaca Mesa Vineyards . . .
I wanted to resist. And then thought about the last Tercero bottle I had.

No curveball questions?
EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!
@tercerowines Cab Franc, yes please! When shall I empty my wallet for this?
@drhellknow Patience grasshopper
@tercerowines You tease! :Wax-on, wax-off; wax-on, wax-off; wax-on, wax-off:
@drhellknow yep, these are definitely not ‘cheap’ compared to many other offers on here and i understand that . . .
And where are the other rats?
@tercerowines Rats eaten by Cats.
AWOL Rats aside, great winemaker participation here.
@tercerowines
All too frequently, unfortunately.
Cancel them to the Black List.
@rjquillin @tercerowines I know the last time I was a rat, I only got communication from WCC about ten minutes after it was delivered. Fortunately I am crazy about checking UPS so I was aware anyway…
@rjquillin @tercerowines All of the shipments were delayed in transit and I think 2 didn’t make it.
@rjquillin @WCCWineGirl ouch . . .
@tercerowines @WCCWineGirl
Yup, that’s a problem when it’s all last minute.
“overnight” shipping just isn’t for the past year or so.
A few days allowance can make all the difference;
especially for the Friday one-day.
@rjquillin @tercerowines @WCCWineGirl E.g.
@klezman @rjquillin @tercerowines @WCCWineGirl “new site (divvyup)”???
@klezman @rjquillin @tercerowines @WCCWineGirl New site??? Is it something related or is it a competitor we’re probably not supposed to talk about? I need more wine sites! not.
@pmarin @rjquillin @tercerowines @WCCWineGirl Clearly y’all missed this…

@rjquillin @tercerowines
“IF” they know it’s coming. We’ve had people get emails while they were on vacation
Also sent to alternate address. But yes, we try to report, even if a bottle arrives late!
Any splits near San Fernando Valley, CA?
@connorbush Does San Diego count?
Tick tick tick . . .
@tercerowines Hmm. does that mean you know something we don’t? (well, I’m pretty sure you do) or just commenting that the re-witching hour (switchover hour) coming tonight.
@pmarin not sure how to answer that . . .
Why isn’t this sold out?!?!
Come on people, BUY ALL OF THE WINE!
@klezman its getting closer . . .
@klezman @tercerowines translation: he’s packing the last few cases now???
@klezman I called sell-out at 9am EST but I was wrong
@klezman
Did my share …
@MarkDaSpark
any to spare?
@klezman This is actually annoying. Stop pushing the wine sales. klezman said 3 hours ago:
Why isn’t this sold out?!?!

@klezman this all goes back to my original comments about a group of people on this site that try to steer folks in one direction. Perhaps this is by design, perhaps it isn’t. But it never happened a few years ago, and it is annoying.
@klezman @Turner103200 I kind of remember it happening even on the W site, and I kind-of liked it. After a while you’ll get familiar with some of the usernames even if you never meet in person, and get used whatever type of sentiment they may commonly like to write about. And like with friends, which we kind-of are, you tend to accept what they’re saying even if you find it a bit annoying, and take it how you wish.
@klezman @Turner103200 I mean we are talking products with production of 2 barrels here. Not a high-volume commercial industry.
If I think of wine hype I found annoying, it was probably the excessive promotions and write-ups from Cameron Hughes, which I dabbled in about 10-15 years ago and eventually dropped out.
@klezman @Turner103200 Last point: there is also some sort of satisfaction in getting a sell-out.
Just saying . . .
@tercerowines
I did my job, first sale I believe. Case for me to split between my Idaho and Utah residences. Fan of your wines since the long ago W**T days.
@rc70 thank you!!!
@rc70 @tercerowines Can we just “check out” bottles from the library and return 'em when we’re done?
Oh yeah! And this…

@TimW Strangely appropriate.
Probably not the recommended way to taste Tercero wines, though.
@pmarin right?!?’ The giphy gods were on my side! Although maybe @tercerowines would disagree about the proper way to enjoy his wines?
@tercerowines Not at all related to the wine, but the name Tercero kept sounding strangely nostalgic to me. Then I remember it was the name of the dorm complex I lived in for my first two years at UC Davis.
You didn’t by any chance get your Vit / Enology studies at UC Davis? It’s amazing when talking to winemakers in the Northwest, I found that close to half of them had some association with that program.
@pmarin yep, I lived in tercero for 2 years as well - F Building. I did not get my undergrad degree from UCD but did go back and get my MS in Viticulture and Enology there . . .
@tercerowines That is so cool. You lived in Tercero, now you are Tercero.
@free2day33611 I believe it may have stem inclusion which may be what you did not like?
@free2day33611 Larry also generally recommends a significant decant on his reds. The 3 hours you gave it seems like a good start.
Mourvedre isn’t for everybody. It can be a rather wild tasting grape with more funk than average.
@free2day33611 @klezman That’s part of its appeal to me – it can be wild and meaty and herby. Same profile i like in Syrahs. And probably why i like Grenache the least of the popular Rhone varieties.
@free2day33611 @radiolysis Yeah, I love the funk from Mourvedre, too.
