Small Block Series wines were born from the Hess familyās creative passionsāwine and artāand thrive under the leadership of the fifth generation Hess family, Tim and Sabrina Persson. These wines honor winemaking practices that explore distinctive vineyards and artisan techniques. The Small Block Series reflects the next generationās pursuit of state-of-the-art innovations in the winery, and their desire to express the distinct personalities of Napa Valley grapes in the bottle.
2016 Small Block Series Napa Valley Syrah
Tasting Notes
āThe wine is deeply concentrated in color, with aromas of blueberry, boysenberry and a touch of mocha lifting from the glass. The aromas are welcoming, filling the senses and inviting the first sip that is marked by black fruit flavors and delicious mouthfilling tannins. The notes of cassis and black plum intertwine with brown spice and toasted oak, and are supported by a firm acidity that persists through the lengthy finish.ā - Dave Guffy, Director of Winemaking
Vintage Notes
This Small Block Syrah is from the Stagecoach Vineyard, located in the mountains above Napa Valleyās Stags Leap District. Vintage 2016 had near perfect weather and continues the streak of great California vintages. Winter gave us our average amount of rainfall followed by a warm spring that allowed most varieties to set a nice crop. August cooled things off and allowed some increase in hang time, and we didnāt see any major heat spikes during September and October.
Food Pairing
Coffee and herb crusted lamb chops, duck confit, chicken mole, wild mushrooms, dried figs and dates with blue cheese and balsamic syrup.

2017 Small Block Series Napa Valley Merlot
Tasting Notes
āOur Small Block Series Merlot is a beautiful expression of what this varietal has to offer. Inviting aromas of red currant, black cherry and cocoa lead to a supple wine on the palate. This Merlot is driven by black plum and cassis, which marry with touches of cinnamon spice and toasted oak. Well-managed, mouth-filling tannins appear in such a way that does not overpower the wine as it lingers on a long, pleasant finish.ā - Dave Guffy, Director of Winemaking
Vintage Notes
Vintage 2017 began with restorative rains that replenished soils, helped support vine growth and fortified our vineyards through the spring. The late-August heat wave that continued into September led us to begin harvest on Mount Veeder just after Labor Day. From the start, yields looked promising, as the sugars and acids in the grapes showed incredible balance. The rest of the mountain fruit came off the vine quickly with the consistently warm weather. October was marked by wildfires in the North Coast, and while the fires devastated many homes and properties, our fruit was already picked and safely in the winery, with the majority of the areaās vineyards not significantly affected. Despite it being a tumultuous year, overall, we saw an abundant harvest that gave our winemakers quality fruit and the opportunity to develop wines with depth and character.
Food Pairing
Roasted duck, quail or pork loin alongside a dark berry compote complement the earthy notes in the wine perfectly. Creamy au gratin potatoes or roasted leeks with spring onion and green garlic make delicious additions to complete the meal. - Chad Hendrickson, Executive Chef

2017 Small Block Series Rockpile Zinfandel, Sonoma County
Tasting Notes
"On the nose, the wine presents a beautiful bouquet of cassis, boysenberry and black cherry, which transitions seamlessly into the full bodied and elegant wine. In the glass, it possesses distinct varietal character, driven by juicy black currant and tight tannins supported by a perfectly balanced acidity and delicious notes of toasty oak throughout.ā āRandle Johnson, Winemaker
Vintage Notes
This vibrant Zinfandel hails from the iconic Rockpile appellation. Located just 16 miles from the Pacific Ocean in the northwest corner of Sonoma County, the region is prized by those who love Zinfandel. Sweeping sun exposures, mountainous terroir and shallow, rocky soils stress the vines producing low yields with grapes of exceptional quality.
Vintage 2017 began with restorative rains that replenished soils, helped support vine growth and fortified our Rockpile vineyards through the spring. The late-August heat wave that continued into Labor Day made us extra vigilant in managing fruit ripeness, especially with the Rockpile appellation being situated above the fog line and already receiving consistent sun exposure. However once cooler weather arrived in mid-September, the sugars and acids in our grapes were able to mature at a gradual pace. While October was marked by wildfires in the North Coast, our Zinfandel grapes were already picked and unaffected in Sonoma County. Despite it being a tumultuous year, overall, we saw an abundant harvest that gave our winemakers quality fruit and the opportunity to develop wines with depth and character.
Food Pairing
An elegant but bold pairing with an array of dishes, standing well alongside hearty dishes such as Osso Bucco, roasted venison, filling cassoulets and richly sauced pastas. - Chad Hendrickson, Executive Chef

As fifth generation Hess family, Tim and Sabrina consider themselves stewards of the brand and the land. When Donald Hess came to California in the 1970s, he was attracted to California wine and became fascinated with Mount Veeder. Although few in Napa Valley were cultivating vines at elevation, Donald Hess believed the volcanic slopes of Mount Veeder provided the ideal combination of soils and microclimates to yield elegant wines with rich, complex flavors.
A pioneer by nature, Donald Hess was determined to defy convention and pursue winemaking at elevation, so in 1978, he established The Hess Collection Winery on the site of one of the regionās oldest wineries. He took the opportunity to marry his two creative passions in lifeāwine and artāand he established an art gallery within the winery as a means of sharing his private art collection. Donald Hess and his wife, Ursula, met through their shared love of art, and today, Ursulaās daughter, Sabrina, and her husband, Tim, continue the family legacy of sharing wine and art and the familyās ongoing commitment to making both accessible to all.
Tim and Sabrina have chosen to call the Napa Valley their home. Tim was raised in Southern Africa and Europe, Sabrina raised in Switzerland and London, but the Napa Valley is where they have found their true calling. They strive to impart their own influence on the winery and support state-of-the-art innovations. Together, they continue to advance The Hess Collection as one of the premier family-owned and family-led companies in Napa Valley, and they are hopeful that someday their children too will carry on the Hess family heritage.

An unexpected UPS notification is a bit of a thrill, especially with the reference number āHESSMERLOT LABRATā. Now, if you are a Sideways fan, you may have already closed your browser, and that would be too bad. Despite some of the trends, we count ourselves as trendy contrarians and have never backed off from this very friendly grape. And a Napa wine to boot! TL:DR- this is good!
Aliceās lead time allowed for a planned Memorial Day menu: 3 cheese plate, blackberry balsamic glazed pork loin, crispy baked kale with gruyere and baguette croutons (Iām not a kale fan, but this was excellent), and fresh home grown field greens with pear and cranberry.
First notes: elegant bottle. As an aside, the kismet of the universe showed up with the prominent āSMALL BLOCK SERIESā notation on label and capsule. The coincidence: this weekend for the first time in 20 years I was spending extensive garage time getting a car Iāve had since 1977 (Plymouth Barracuda) back into street duty- which has one of Chryslerās small block 340 engines (any car/wine fans- look us up!). There are no coincidences.
The SBS Hess Merlot was pop ānā poured at 68 degrees. Color was a beautiful garnet ruby that I hope shows in the picture. First notes on the nose- black fruit/light floral/spice. Mrs. Rat- blackberry and cinnamon.
First taste: slight tannins, a bit of alcohol (14.8%) and slight astringency. Fruit lingers on the front palate. Swirl coats the glass, very slow legs. Mrs. Rat- Silky, soft.
The cheese pairing: Westminster Somerdale Rustic Cheddar and a smoked gouda were very nice with the Hess. As a wild card, we also had a Havarti jalapeno- surprisingly nice.
At this point, my wife commented, āI canāt stop drinking it! But weāve got dinner coming.ā
In the interests of science, and in light of my wifeās comment of running low, I decided to see what Merlots we had readily available. It came down to Two Jakes 2011 Lake County or Pedroncelli 2018 Bench Vineyards. I thought the Two Jakes would be an interesting match, with the 7 year difference. It was indeed an interesting tasting. Depending on the food, each showed particular strengths. The 2J showed some added complexity, but the Hess was so very soft and smooth. You couldnāt go wrong with either. Notably the Jakes had more black pepper spice, the Hess with more black fruit (but not overly).
For dessert, the double chocolate chip brownie was the āperfectoā match for the Hess. I think we double or tripled up on the sampling, resulting in a meager amount left for later.
Day 2- stored corked on the counter. Very similar to Day 1. Still a bit of that pucker, which I liked. More cherry/black fruit. The alcohol had settled down. Mrs. Rat noted the spices and blackberry coming out.
We definitely liked this wine, as noted by Mrs. Ratās affinity. Should do well with cellaring. Not sure what the Casemates price will be, but anything in the 25 to 30 range is an excellent deal for this Napa Merlot. Thank you for the ratting opportunity!

Were these labels misprinted? Or are they supposed to look like that? They just seem odd with the print obscured by the blank square and the gold splash. Maybe itās just meā¦or maybe thatās why theyāre here for cheap.
This is the new design for the Small Block Series and it is quite a departure from our previous labels, which Iām quite fond of, but Iāve grown to appreciate the abstract design in goldāI find it very reminiscent of some of the pieces in our art museum! This new design is meant to be bold, expressive and represent the Hess familyās creative passionsāwine and art. With the recent opening of our Lions Head cellar at the winery, we felt that the Small Block Series wines should reflect the unexpected and modern style of the cellar where they are crafted.
@InFrom, has all of this been claimed already or anything left? I can take 1 or 2 of each if still left to be taken. Iām in Jersey City and can drive to Manhattan for pick up.
@davirom Noted, thanks.
Iāve got a storage issue as well, but sure like the case price better. Hopefully weāll get additional help, depending on how the Rats Report.

Nose: Strawberry jam, tawny port, with a hint of vinegar
Color: dark opaque plum
Thick slow legs
Mouth: thick and dry
slightly sour blackberry, tannins, black pepper
Can feel the alcohol, the finish is a long sour pucker, dry and tight
This needs to open up a LOT
Vinturi:
Nose has mellowed
The sour is up front and more cherry, the pepper moves toward the finish but the sourness holds all the way though.
Decanted half and re-corked.
+6 hours
Opened and mellowed a bit but itās really tight and the sour notes are still pervasive. Tannins are still pronounced.
Went well with spicy chicken Pad See Ew.
If youāre drinking right now Iād decant a good 12+ hours, but I think it definitely needs couple years in the back of the cellar.

2017 Small Block Series Rockpile Zinfandel
Excited to see a Rockpile AVA zin, have had a few, Mauritson, Shelton, no history with this Hess bottling. So pulled the cork at 62 F. Poured off a glass, and the rest an easy pour into a decanter. Medium ruby in color, nose is subtle, smells earthy zinny (can I say that?) and a bit of chocolate? Trying to coax the fruit out of it but itās hiding in the background. Blackberry/dark cherry. Not bright. Tannins are not overwhelming but definitely present. A couple of hours in Iām thinking this needs some time, the fruit still seems to be hiding but Iām liking what Iām getting out of it. Elegant but not light. Saved a solid pour for day two. Poured back into the bottle and cork back in the bottle. My lovely brideās first impression was blackberry and spice and she seemed to think it was a bit juicier than I did. She thought the finish a bit warm. For me day two the blackberry fruit seemed to pick up and become a bit sweeter. Tannins still present and a relatively short finish. My bride thought day two was more raspberry and less spice.
Food pairing day one was Korean style Flannery flanken short ribs. Maybe a bit out of the box for a zin pairing but not too bad and maybe not the best choice. Day two was pizza from a joint down the street and it was a better choice.
Bottom line I think this needs a little time in the cellar to show itās best stuff.
My thought was sub $20 worth the price of admission and this is just slightly above that.

@benguin986 it is perfect size for the CM sticker!

@rjquillin We have been Hess fans for years but with a mystery case coming, weāre out of room. If it helps, I would be in for 1 set due to FOMO.
