THAT REMINDS ME OF: The Tin Man, or Tin Woodman.
In The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, Dorothy encounters the Tin Woodman in the forest, rusted by rain. His name was Nick Chopper, a regular woodsman, who fell in love with a girl. His axe would be enchanted by the Wicked Witch of the East to cut off his limbs, one-by-one, over time. He would subsequently replace each limb with one made of tin until nothing but tin was left. After getting him moving again, he joins the group on their way to the Wizard in the hope that he might receive a heart. The group is tasked to kill the Wicked Witch of the West, and he assists them in doing so. His reward, upon returning, is a silk heart full of sawdust. He believes it has fixed him, when in truth he had his feelings all along.
