Catatonia is a neurological and/or psychological state that can stem from multiple different underlying disorders, typically mood related. Considered a syndrome, most people associate it with a person being either physically immobilized or mentally withdrawn. However, it can also include abnormal movements and behaviors as well as mutism. Rather than just being stuck in a single position or unresponsive, the catatonic individual might be caught in a loop of performing strange and seemingly purposeless gestures, motions, and actions. Sometimes this is accompanied by hallucinations and/or delusions.

To diagnose catatonia, an individual displays at least three of twelve symptoms: stupor (no movement), catalepsy (passively postures against gravity), waxy flexibility (can be repositioned and holds that position), mutism, negativism (unresponsiveness), posturing (actively postures against gravity), odd mannerisms, stereotypy (repetitive movements), agitation, grimacing (fixed expression), echolalia (copying speech), and echopraxia (copying motion).
